Chapter 2 - Sirens in the Driveway

The wail of police sirens pierced the crisp morning air, cutting through the heavy silence of the hallway like a jagged blade. Eleanor froze, the sound vibrating straight through the floorboards and rattling the antique frames hanging along the wood-paneled walls. The flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser began to paint frantic, colorful streaks across the American flag near the foyer, signaling the absolute end of the reality she had so carefully constructed over the past decade. Julian didn’t flinch at the sound; his eyes remained locked onto hers, cold, hard, and devoid of any lingering trace of the man she thought she knew.
“You called the authorities?” Eleanor whispered, her voice barely a breath, the reality of her situation finally beginning to pierce her denial. “Julian, we are a family. Think of what this does to our reputation, to the foundation, to everything we’ve built together in this city.”
“Our foundation was built on quicksand, Eleanor, and you dug the pit,” Julian replied coldly, stepping back just enough to allow Maria to slip past them toward the side exit.
Maria kept her head down, her dark braids swaying against the shoulders of her dark teal dress as she hurried away with little Leo safely secured against her chest. Eleanor watched them go, a surge of pure, primal rage threatening to override her fear. She wanted to lunge after them, to rip the baby from the sling and reclaim her territory, but Julian’s solid frame blocked her path entirely. The front heavy oak door swung open with a resounding thud, and the heavy boots of two uniformed police officers echoed across the marble foyer.
“Mr. Sterling?” the lead officer called out, his hand resting casually near his holster as he stepped into the formal hallway. “We received an urgent dispatch regarding an attempted poisoning and domestic endangerment on these premises.”
“Right here, Officer,” Julian said clearly, never taking his burning gaze off Eleanor. “My wife, Eleanor Sterling, attempted to administer a lethal dose of barbiturates to our infant son’s formula less than twenty minutes ago. I have the digital logs and the physical evidence locked in the study.”
Eleanor’s knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the wood paneling, her fingernails digging deep into the expensive wallpaper. She realized then that Julian hadn’t just stumbled upon her actions by chance; he had been investigating her for weeks, quietly gathering a dossier that would guarantee her complete and utter destruction.
“It’s a frame-up!” Eleanor screamed, pivoting to face the approaching officers with theatrical desperation, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “He wants a divorce and full custody! He’s framing me to ruin my credibility in court!”
The officer stepped closer, pulling out a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt, his expression entirely unimpressed by her performance.

“Mrs. Sterling, please turn around and place your hands behind your back,” the officer instructed, grabbing her by the arm before she could take another step.
