Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive boardroom of Sterling Enterprises on the fiftieth floor of downtown Manhattan was bathed in the harsh, sterile light of dawn filtering through wall-to-wall glass windows. The polished marble table reflected the solemn faces of the twelve board members sitting in absolute silence, waiting for Julian to arrive. The heavy double doors swung open, and Julian stepped into the room looking every bit the ruthless titan of industry he had always been, despite the exhaustion etched into the fine lines around his eyes. He took his seat at the head of the table, flanked by Thomas and Maria—who now wore a sharp, tailored black suit instead of her maid’s uniform, serving as his primary security liaison.

“Before anyone speaks about the scandal currently dominating the morning news cycle,” Julian began, his voice cutting through the heavy tension like a razor, “we need to address the security breach that occurred at my estate last night.”

Arthur Sterling—Julian’s uncle and the longest-serving member of the board—cleared his throat loudly, leaning back in his leather chair with a dismissive smirk.

“Let’s be entirely honest with each other, Julian,” Arthur said smoothly, adjusting his expensive silk tie. “Your personal life has become a public liability. Between your wife attempting to poison your infant son and the federal investigations into your domestic affairs, the company’s stock has dropped twelve percent since the opening bell this morning.”

Julian stared at his uncle, noticing the subtle, triumphant gleam in the older man’s eyes—a gleam he had never paid enough attention to in the past.

“The stock dropped because Victoria Vance leaked classified acquisition reports to the press at three o’clock this morning,” Julian said evenly, sliding a printed transfer log across the gleaming marble table toward his uncle. “Using an offshore account registered under a shell company that traces directly back to your private holdings, Uncle Arthur.”

The room went deathly silent. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats, casting nervous glances back and forth between Julian and Arthur. The older man’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl as he looked down at the financial records without touching them.

“This is a desperate fabrication,” Arthur scoffed, though a slight tremor in his voice betrayed his composure. “You’re grasping at straws to deflect from the fact that your wife is a criminal lunatic who nearly killed your heir.”

“My wife was a pawn,” Julian corrected, standing up and placing both hands flat on the table as he leaned forward. “Planted into my life twenty years ago by a syndicate specializing in corporate espionage and identity theft—a syndicate that you happen to have funded through our own subsidiary accounts since the day I took over as CEO.”

Thomas stepped forward, placing a thick dossier containing Victoria Vance’s signed confession right in front of the lead independent director.

“Victoria was arrested an hour ago trying to board a private flight to Zurich,” Thomas stated clearly. “She gave us the entire chain of command, starting right here in this room.”

Arthur stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward against the floor with a loud crash, his face turning a furious shade of crimson as he glared at his nephew with pure hatred.

“You think you’ve won, you arrogant little fool?” Arthur snarled, his mask of corporate civility completely shattering. “The board votes on your removal as CEO in exactly ten minutes, and without my proxy votes, you don’t have the majority to stop it!”
