Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Slap

The sting of Julian’s palm across Eleanor’s cheek still burned against her skin, a hot, throbbing brand of betrayal inside the mahogany-paneled hallway. Eleanor staggered back against the polished wood, her hand flying up to press against her bruised flesh, her dark burgundy pantsuit feeling suddenly too tight, like armor that had betrayed her. Her red hair, pinned up in a meticulous chignon, felt slightly loose, a few strands slipping down to frame her wide, terrified, yet furious eyes. Julian stood before her, his navy blue suit sharp against the American flag hanging limply on the wall, his maroon tie slightly askew from his sudden movement. His finger was pointed inches from her nose, trembling with a fury she had never witnessed in their ten years of marriage.

“I saw what you did!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings and crashing into the silence of the estate.

Eleanor gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she tried to regain her composure. The physical pain of the strike was nothing compared to the absolute panic clawing at her chest. She looked past Julian’s towering frame to where Maria stood frozen against the wall. The young Latina maid, wearing her dark teal dress and crisp white apron, clutched little Leo tightly to her chest inside the wrap sling. The infant was stirring, sensing the electric tension in the air, letting out a soft, whimpering cry that cut straight through Eleanor’s frantic thoughts.

“You’re out of your mind, Julian!” Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound authoritative. “She’s manipulating you! She’s trying to turn him against me, to steal my family, my entire life!”

“Don’t you dare lie to me anymore!” Julian snarled, stepping even closer, invading her personal space until she could smell the expensive coffee and pure adrenaline radiating off him. “I watched the security feed from the nursery, Eleanor. I saw you standing over the crib. I saw what you were holding in your hand.”

Eleanor felt the blood drain entirely from her face, leaving her skin stark white beneath her auburn hair. The security feed. She had forgotten about the newly installed smart-home cameras in the east wing. Her mind raced at breakneck speed, calculating every possible lie, every excuse she could manufacture to save her crumbling facade.

“It was nothing,” Eleanor stammered, her voice cracking as she forced a hysterical laugh. “I was just checking his blanket. You’re misinterpreting a mother’s exhaustion!”

“Exhaustion doesn’t look like poison, Eleanor,” Julian whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly register. “And the police are already through the front gates.”
