Chapter 8 - The Return of the Prodigal

The man standing in the doorway stepped under the harsh fluorescent lights of the precinct holding area. He wore a charcoal-grey tailored suit that fit his lean frame with surgical precision. His dark hair was combed back neatly, and his sharp, angular jawline bore a striking resemblance to Marcus—except for the cold, calculating intelligence shining in his piercing blue eyes.

"Hello, sister-in-law," Julian Vance said, his voice smooth and devoid of any warmth as he offered a mocking, half-amused smile.

Elena stood frozen, her mind struggling to process the impossible sight before her. "You’re... you’re supposed to be dead. You died in the Alps five years ago."

"Reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated, mostly for tax and insurance purposes," Julian replied smoothly, stepping past the guard and into the cell. He glanced down at Elena’s stained, torn white lace wedding dress with mild disdain. "Though I must admit, your choice of bridal wear leaves much to be desired. But then again, you always did have cheap taste."

Attorney Miller stood up quickly, placing himself between Julian and Elena. "Mr. Vance, I assume you’re the one who pulled the strings to clear my client's record. What is your game here?"

Julian didn't even glance at the lawyer. He kept his eyes locked entirely on Elena, stepping closer until the heavy scent of expensive sandalwood cologne filled the cramped space.

"Game, Counselor? This is family business," Julian said softly. "And Marcus is currently learning a very hard lesson about what happens when you play chess with people who own the board."

"Where is Marcus?" Elena demanded, stepping around Miller, her anger finally overpowering her fear. "You used him! You manipulated him into stealing the biotech formula and framing me so you could swoop in and take control of the company!"

Julian let out a low, amused chuckle. "Marcus is a weak-willed idiot who couldn't run a lemonade stand, let alone a global empire. I didn't have to manipulate him much—he was already drowning in gambling debts he hid from the family. I simply offered him a lifeline, and he gladly jumped off the cliff holding your hand."

"You monster," Elena whispered, raising her hand to strike him across the face.

Before her fingers could connect, Julian caught her wrist with lightning-fast reflexes, his grip tightening painfully around her arm. His smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, threatening glare.

"Don't ever try that again," Julian warned, his voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss. "You think you're the victim here, Elena? You’re just a footnote in a war that started long before you ever walked into the Vance offices."

"Then why am I out of jail?" Elena asked, gritting her teeth as she tried to pull her arm away. "If I'm just a footnote, why drop the charges?"

Julian released her wrist abruptly, smoothing the lapel of his charcoal suit. He turned toward the open doorway, motioning for them to follow.

"Because grandmother wants a family meeting," Julian said over his shoulder. "And you’re invited to the main event."
