Chapter 1 - The Shattered Toast

Elena Vance stared at the dark mahogany wooden box resting heavily on the polished marble bar counter. Her chest heaved beneath the intricate layers of white French lace, her knuckles turning bone-white as she gripped the cold edge of the mahogany. Around her, the grand ballroom of the St. Regis hotel still smelled faintly of imported white roses and chilled amber champagne, but the intoxicating aroma of celebration had turned instantly to suffocating ash. Just moments ago, this room echoed with polite laughter and the gentle clinking of crystal flutes. Now, a devastating silence fell over the hundred invited guests, suffocating every whispered conversation.
"What are you doing? Put that back!" Elena demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy air with sharp, trembling anger. Her dark updo began to loosen, a few strands of brunette hair falling across her flushed, panicked face.
Across the counter, the clean-shaven bartender in his crisp white dress shirt and tailored grey vest did not flinch. He moved with slow, practiced deliberation, his expression entirely unbothered by her rising hysteria.
"I'm sorry ma'am, service has been canceled," the bartender replied calmly, his voice smooth and devoid of any human empathy.
"Canceled by who?" Elena cried out desperately, her wide eyes darting across the opulent room as panic seized her throat.
In the background, the hired string quartet abruptly stopped playing in the middle of a Mozart sonata. The cellist packed his instrument into its hard black case with a loud, echoing snap, while guests in designer suits and evening gowns exchanged nervous, confused glances. Elena turned frantically, her gaze sweeping past the empty dance floor until it locked onto a solitary figure standing near the grand arched entrance.
An elderly woman in her seventies, draped in an uncompromising dark blue beaded gown, stared back with cold, unyielding eyes.
"I did," the elderly woman said coldly.
Elena’s breath hitched. The woman was Victoria Vance—her own formidable grandmother-in-law, and the absolute matriarch of the Vance global shipping empire. Victoria stepped forward into the harsh spotlight of the crystal chandelier, her face a mask of calculated fury.
"You can't do this," Elena whispered, stepping away from the bar and toward the older woman. "Marcus and I paid for—"

"Marcus paid for nothing," Victoria interrupted, raising a single, diamond-ringed hand. "And neither did you. Until I see the inheritance transfer documents signed this morning, this wedding is dead."
