Chapter 12 - The Sniper’s Shadow

A hail of glass shards rained across the mahogany boardroom as alarms began to blare throughout the seventy-fifth floor. The four corporate security guards instantly drew their firearms, diving for cover behind the heavy oak conference table while yelling into their shoulder radios.

"Get down!" Julian roared, grabbing Victoria by the arm and dragging her behind the reinforced concrete pillars of the structural wall.

Elena dropped to the floor, crawling beneath the heavy conference table as smoke and cold night air rushed into the ruined boardroom. Through the shattered expanse of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the howling wind whipped loose papers into a chaotic blizzard across the room.

"Sniper on the adjacent rooftop! Sector four!" one of the guards shouted over the blaring alarms, returning blind fire toward the neighboring skyscraper with his service pistol.

Marcus thrashed against the ropes tying him to the chair, screaming in blind terror as glass fragments littered his lap. "Get me out of here! They're going to kill us!"

Julian pressed himself flat against the concrete pillar, his face pale with sudden shock. He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, his fingers flying frantically across the screen. "Who is this? Identify yourself!" he shouted into the device, but the only response was static and the distant, muffled pop of a suppressed firearm.

Elena, hiding beneath the table just feet away from the signed parchment paper, noticed something glinting amidst the scattered glass shards. It was a small, high-tech electronic flash drive that had been attached to the bottom of the document by a magnetic strip—something neither Julian nor Victoria had noticed in the chaos.

Without hesitating, Elena reached out from beneath the table, her fingers grazing the cold metal of the flash drive. She snatched it up and quickly tucked it into the hidden pocket of her torn wedding dress.

"Find that shooter!" Victoria commanded, her voice still sharp and commanding despite her trembling hands. She peered around the pillar, glaring across the room toward Elena's hiding spot. "And secure the document!"

One of the security guards broke cover, rushing toward the table where the signed parchment lay. He dropped to one knee, sweeping the papers into his arms, but as he stood up to retreat, a single, precise shot rang out from across the skyline.

The guard’s chest exploded in a crimson bloom of blood, and he collapsed backward onto the floor, lifeless before he even hit the marble.

Silence fell over the room instantly, save for the wailing alarms and the howling wind. No one dared to move.

Then, the private elevator chime at the far end of the boardroom pinged softly.

The heavy glass doors slid open.

A tall, cloaked figure stepped out of the elevator, holding a sleek silver briefcase in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other. As the figure stepped into the dim emergency lighting, Julian’s breath hitched in sheer disbelief.

"You..." Julian whispered, staring at the newcomer with wide, terrified eyes. "That's impossible. You died in Zurich."
