Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Elena clutched the note to her chest, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The opulent penthouse suite, decorated with velvet drapes and priceless oil paintings, suddenly felt like a cage closing in around her. She looked past Victoria’s unblinking, predatory gaze to the second page of the letter that had slipped onto the Persian rug. Kneeling down in her intricate white lace wedding dress, she picked it up.
"What is this?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as her eyes scanned the neat rows of numbers and corporate letterheads.
"That, my dear, is the forensic audit of the Vance shipping accounts," Victoria said, stepping further into the room and letting the heavy oak door click shut behind her. The click sounded like a gunshot in the silent suite. "Over the past six months, four million dollars vanished from our European logistics fund. For the longest time, our internal security team thought we had a mole in the Zurich office. But today, the digital signature was finally traced."
Elena stood up slowly, clutching the paper like a shield. "Marcus? Marcus would never steal from his own family. He’s weak, yes, but he’s not a criminal!"
"Isn't he?" Victoria countered smoothly, lifting the silver-plated USB drive. "Every single unauthorized wire transfer was funneled directly into a private account registered under a shell corporation. And do you know who the sole beneficiary of that shell corporation is, Elena? Take a guess."
"I don't know," Elena lied, though a sickening realization was already taking root in the back of her mind. The expensive engagement ring sparkling on her finger, the designer dress, the lavish reception—none of it made sense on Marcus’s meager salary as a junior vice president.
"Look at the name on the corporate filing, page four," Victoria commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register.
Elena’s shaking fingers flipped to the back of the document. There, printed in crisp, undeniable black ink, was her own full name: Elena Vance, née Davis, registered as the sole owner of Horizon Holdings LLC.
"No," Elena gasped, stumbling backward until the edge of the mahogany desk pressed hard against her lower back. "This is a forgery! I have never heard of Horizon Holdings in my life! I didn't sign this!"
"The digital timestamp proves the papers were authenticated this morning using your biometric signature from the courthouse marriage registry," Victoria said, her eyes narrowing as she closed the distance between them. "You thought you could marry into the Vance empire, bleed our accounts dry, and walk away with half our fortune in a swift divorce. A classic long con."
"That's insane!" Elena yelled, anger briefly overriding her terror. "If I stole four million dollars, do you really think I’d be wearing off-the-rack lace and stressing over catering deposits? Check my personal accounts! I have nothing!"

Victoria stopped inches away from Elena, her cold gaze piercing right through her. "Smart thieves don't keep the loot in plain sight, Elena. But the federal marshals are already downstairs. And the warrant has your name on it."
