Chapter 4 - Sirens in the Courtyard

The distant wail of police sirens cut through the heavy silence of the penthouse, floating up through the double-paned glass windows from the street below. Elena froze, the blood draining completely from her face. The flashing red and blue lights began to paint jagged, frantic patterns across the velvet drapes and the polished mahogany furniture.

"You called the police?" Elena whispered, the reality of the trap finally settling over her. "Before the ceremony even finished, you had me framed and arrested?"

"I protected my legacy," Victoria corrected coldly, her face impassive. "The Vance empire has survived world wars, hostile takeovers, and economic collapses. It will not be dismantled by a gold-digging nobody from the suburbs who thought she could outsmart three generations of corporate sharks."

"I am not a criminal!" Elena shouted, stepping forward with tears of pure fury burning in her eyes. "Marcus set me up! He used my courthouse biometric data when we filed our marriage license this morning! He made me sign a digital consent form on his tablet, claiming it was just standard tax paperwork for married couples!"

Victoria tilted her head slightly, studying Elena with a fleeting look of cold curiosity. "A romantic gesture, turning your new bride into an unwitting accomplice. My grandson truly inherited my ruthlessness, if not my intelligence. Too bad for him, I care nothing for sentimentality."

"Where is he, Victoria?" Elena demanded, grabbing the older woman by the delicate lace of her dark blue beaded gown. "If he’s the one who stole the money, if he’s the mastermind behind this entire nightmare, you have to let me explain this to the police! They’ll find him!"

Victoria looked down at Elena’s hand gripping her dress, then slowly raised her eyes back to Elena’s face. With a swift, practiced motion, she brushed Elena’s hand away as if it were a speck of dust.

"The police are looking for the sole owner of Horizon Holdings," Victoria stated calmly. "And according to the legal documents filed under your exact biometric signature, that person is you. Marcus is already on a private flight crossing international airspace. By the time the authorities realize he’s gone, he’ll be in a country with no extradition treaties."

Elena stumbled back, the room spinning around her. "He ran... he actually abandoned me to take the fall for his federal crimes."

"A marital sacrifice," Victoria remarked dryly.

Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed outside the penthouse door, followed by a loud, authoritative knock and the jingle of police radio chatter.

"New York Police Department! Open the door!" a gruff voice commanded from the hallway.

Elena turned toward the door in absolute panic, but before she could take a single step, Victoria reached into her handbag and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound diary, tossing it onto the desk.

"If you want to survive the next forty-eight hours, read the last entry in that book," Victoria whispered harshly. "Because my grandson didn't just steal money from the family account. He stole something much more dangerous."
