Chapter 2 - The Empty Throne

The silence in the grand ballroom grew heavier, pressing against Elena’s eardrums like lead. One hundred pairs of eyes shifted from the towering crystal chandeliers down to the ornate marble floor, watching the bride tremble under the weight of public humiliation. Victoria Vance stood motionless, her posture rigid as an iron spike, radiating an aura of absolute dominance that had built a multi-billion-dollar empire across three continents.

"Inheritance transfer documents?" Elena echoed, her voice cracking as the shock threatened to pull her under. "What are you talking about, Victoria? Marcus and I signed the marriage license legally this morning at the courthouse. This wedding is a celebration of our union, not a business merger!"

Victoria let out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed off the vaulted ceilings. "You naive girl. In the Vance family, love is a luxury for the poor. Everything Marcus owns—from the bespoke Italian suit on his back to the champagne in that wooden box—belongs to the family trust. And I hold the keys to the vault."

"Where is Marcus?" Elena demanded, suddenly realizing the groom had been missing from the dais for over twenty minutes. A cold dread pooled in her stomach. "He told me he was checking on the catering staff. Where is he?"

Victoria smiled, a thin, cruel parting of her lips. "My grandson is currently locked in the penthouse suite upstairs, discovering the true cost of betraying his bloodline."

Elena didn't wait to hear another word. Gathering the heavy layers of her white lace wedding dress in her trembling hands, she turned and sprinted toward the grand staircase, leaving her stunned guests whispering in her wake. Her drop earrings bounced violently against her neck as she took the marble steps two at a time, her lungs burning with every desperate breath.

When she reached the heavy oak doors of the penthouse, she found it unlocked. Pushing it open, she stepped inside, expecting to find Marcus pacing in panic. Instead, the room was empty, save for a single envelope resting on the mahogany desk, addressed in Marcus's frantic, messy handwriting.

Elena walked slowly toward the desk, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her fingers shook as she tore open the flap and pulled out the single sheet of paper inside. Her eyes scanned the hurried words, and the color drained entirely from her face.

"Elena, I had to run," the note read. "Grandmother knows about the offshore accounts. If I stay, I'm a dead man. I'm sorry."

Before Elena could fully process the betrayal, the heavy oak door slammed shut behind her with a resounding thud. She spun around to find Victoria standing in the doorway, blocking the only exit, holding a silver-plated USB drive in her outstretched hand.

"Read the second page, child," Victoria whispered softly, stepping closer. "The one Marcus was too cowardly to leave in the note."
