Chapter 6 - Trapped Below

The damp chill of the basement suddenly felt like a physical barrier, pressing against Arthur’s chest as he stood alone in the absolute darkness. He fumbled frantically with his smartphone, tapping the screen until the flashlight beam cut a jagged, brilliant path through the dusty air. The beam swept across the concrete floor, catching the open safe, the scattered storage boxes, and the heavy metal door at the base of the stairs. The heavy bolt was firmly engaged from the outside, trapping him down here like a caged animal.

"Victor?" Arthur called out, his voice echoing hollowly against the concrete walls. "I know it was you! I have the folder, Victor! The bank slips have your name all over them!"

There was no immediate answer, only the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps pacing back and forth just above the stairwell. Then came the unmistakable sound of a heavy padlock clicking shut through the exterior latch. They hadn't just locked him in; they had secured him behind a secondary physical barrier. Arthur rushed up the wooden steps, slamming his shoulder against the heavy door, but it held firm, reinforced by solid oak and iron brackets.

"Dad!" A muffled voice called out from the far side of the basement wall, near the small utility window that led out to the backyard.

Arthur spun around, shining his light toward the crawlspace. Leo’s face appeared briefly behind the dusty glass of the small exterior window, illuminated by the amber glow of a neighbor's porch light.

"Leo? What are you doing down here? Get back inside the house right now!" Arthur shouted, rushing across the concrete floor.

"Mom sent me to find you," Leo yelled back, his voice strained as he forced the small window open another few inches. "Dad, look out! Someone is in the backyard!"

Before Arthur could reach the window, a heavy beam of light cut through the glass from the outside, blinding him instantly. A gloved hand reached through the open window, dropping a heavy, ticking pocket watch onto the concrete floor right at Arthur’s feet.
