Chapter 5 - The Basement Vault

The basement stairs creaked ominously beneath Arthur’s hurried footsteps as he descended into the cool, damp air of the lower level. The overhead fluorescent bulb flickered to life with a harsh buzz, casting an institutional glare over the rows of storage boxes and old furniture. In the far corner stood the heavy iron wall safe, an antique model that his grandfather had handed down decades ago. Arthur’s hands shook so badly that he dropped the small brass key twice before finally managing to insert it into the rusted keyhole. He spun the combination dial, inputting the six-digit sequence that he had memorized since childhood. With a heavy, metallic clank, the thick steel door swung open.

The safe interior was mostly empty, save for a single manila folder labeled with his business partner’s initials: V.R.

Arthur pulled the folder out, flipping open the cover to reveal a series of printed bank transfer slips and signed corporate resolutions. His breath caught in his throat. Every single fraudulent loan, every unauthorized withdrawal from the children's trust, and every shell company used to funnel the funds bore not Arthur’s signature, but the meticulously forged signature of Victor Ross, his oldest friend and business partner of fifteen years.

"Unbelievable," Arthur muttered, slamming the folder shut in a surge of absolute fury. Victor had systematically framed him, using Arthur's own name as the fall guy while quietly looting the company dry.

He pulled out his phone to call the authorities, but before he could dial three digits, the basement lights suddenly cut out, plunging the room into absolute darkness.

A heavy footstep echoed on the wooden basement stairs above him. Someone was blocking the only exit, and the sound of a deadbolt sliding into place signaled that he was trapped.
