Chapter 3 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The living room plunged into a suffocating silence as the heavy brass doorknob turned slowly, resisting for a fraction of a second before swinging inward. Arthur sprang to his feet, instinctively stepping in front of Elena and the children. The hallway light flickered once, casting long, distorted shadows across the wood-paneled walls. Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a charcoal overcoat, his face half-obscured by the dim lighting. He didn't knock, nor did he wait for an invitation; he simply stepped across the threshold with the quiet confidence of someone who owned the very ground they walked on.
"I see the delivery arrived," the man said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth. He glanced briefly at the white envelope still clutched in Arthur's hand. "Good. That saves us the trouble of a second visit."
"Get out of my house," Arthur demanded, stepping forward despite the warning bells screaming in his head. "If you take one more step, I am calling the police right now."
The man let out a low, dry chuckle that sent a chill down Elena’s spine. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a slim leather wallet, but instead of a badge, he tossed a small, tarnished silver key onto the coffee table.
"The police won't help you, Mr. Sterling," the visitor replied calmly, adjusting his leather gloves. "Not when your signature is on the collateral agreement for the warehouse project. You borrowed against assets you didn't own, and now the deadline is Friday noon."
"I never signed that document," Arthur protested, his voice rising in panic. "It was forged!"

"Prove it in court after the transfer clears," the man smiled coldly, turning toward the door. "Or don't. But remember, the children have soccer practice on Thursday afternoon, don't they?"
