Chapter 12 - The Alleyway Confrontation

The high beams of the black SUV cut through the driving rain, casting long, distorted shadows against the grimy brick walls of the alley. Arthur threw his arm up to shield his eyes, instinctively pulling Sarah behind him as the heavy vehicle idled forward, blocking their only path to the street. The driver's side door clicked open, and a tall man in a charcoal overcoat stepped out into the downpour, holding a black umbrella that shielded his face from the harsh glare of the headlights. It was the same man who had visited Arthur's living room earlier that evening.
"Running away so soon, Mr. Sterling?" the man called out smoothly, his voice carrying easily over the hiss of the rain. "And you brought a journalist friend. How wonderfully dramatic."
"Back off!" Arthur shouted, stepping in front of Sarah. "You have what you wanted—the leverage, the accounts. Just let my wife go!"
"Your wife is currently enjoying a very secure, climate-controlled room while you run around playing detective," the man replied, taking a slow, measured step forward. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek, modern tablet device, tapping the screen once before turning it toward them.
The screen displayed a live camera feed of Leo and Maya sitting quietly in the kitchen of Officer Miller's house down the street, completely unaware that they were being watched through a high-definition security camera hidden in the smoke detector.
Sarah gasped, her professional composure cracking for the first time. "They're watching the kids, too."
"Of course we are," the man smiled coldly. "Mr. Sterling, you seem to think this is a negotiation. It is not. You will sign the final asset transfer authorization codes at the downtown bank tomorrow morning at precisely nine o'clock, or the children's safe haven becomes a very permanent trap."

Before Arthur could lunge forward in a blind rage, Sarah grabbed his arm, her eyes flashing with desperate warning. She reached into her backpack, pulled out a small, modified radio transmitter, and pressed a button hidden beneath the fabric.
