Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Door

The revelation hung in the air like smoke from a dying fire, choking the oxygen from the room. Arthur stared at his wife, realizing the terrifying depth of the chasm beneath their seemingly perfect suburban life. The dark suit he wore felt less like business attire and more like a mourning cloak. He had spent years climbing the corporate ladder, believing that financial success was the ultimate shield for his family, only to discover that his ambition had invited the wolf right up to the front porch. Maya buried her face in Elena’s silk blouse, too young to understand the magnitude of the words being exchanged, but old enough to feel the crushing weight of her parents' terror. Leo stood frozen, his eyes locked on the white envelope still clutched in his father's trembling hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Arthur asked, his voice barely above a murmur as he dropped heavily onto the edge of the sofa. "Elena, why would you carry that alone?"
"Because you were already drowning," Elena replied, her tone softening as she walked over to place a hesitant hand on his shoulder. "Every time you came home from the office, you looked like a ghost. I thought if I used the trust, I could buy us enough time to restructure your business loans. I thought I could fix it before you ever had to know."
"You can't just drain a children's trust fund, Mom," Leo spoke up, his voice cracking with a strange, adult gravity that startled them both.

Arthur looked up at his son, seeing a reflection of his own stubborn pride mirrored in the boy's dark eyes. Before Arthur could formulate a response, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front hallway. Someone was trying the front door handle. The gentle click of the latch turning instantly froze everyone in place, turning their blood to ice.
