Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Ledger

The front door clicked shut with a sickening finality, leaving the Sterling family trapped in the suffocating aftermath of the threat. Arthur stood paralyzed by the doorway, the silver key resting on the coffee table like a cursed artifact. Elena sank onto the sofa, pulling Leo and Maya into a tight, trembling embrace. The veneer of their comfortable upper-middle-class existence had shattered completely, exposing the jagged, dangerous reality beneath. Arthur knew he had to act, and he had to act fast, but every logical avenue of escape seemed sealed shut by his own past mistakes. He walked slowly back to his home office, the place where the nightmare had apparently begun, determined to find the paper trail that could prove his innocence.
The office was in disarray, papers strewn across the mahogany desk where Leo had originally found the envelope. Arthur flicked on the desk lamp, its harsh yellow glow illuminating rows of financial ledgers and corporate tax returns. He sat down, his fingers flying across his laptop keyboard as he logged into the company's master accounting database.
The screen flashed red, displaying a stark, unforgiving error message: Access Denied. User Credentials Revoked.
Arthur stared at the monitor in utter disbelief. Someone had locked him out of his own financial system. He tried his backup administrator password, but the system flatly rejected it again, locking the account entirely after three failed attempts. A notification popped up in the corner of the screen, indicating that a remote override had been executed from an unknown IP address just twelve minutes ago.
Before Arthur could process the breach, his cell phone buzzed violently against the wooden desk. He picked it up with a shaking hand, seeing an unknown caller ID flashing on the screen. He swiped to answer, pressing the phone to his ear.

"Check your personal safe in the basement, Arthur," a synthesized voice hissed through the speaker. "The real proof of who sold you out is waiting right there."
