Chapter 8

The afternoon sun was sinking low behind the tree line when a sharp knock rattled Elena’s front door once more. This time, there was no hesitation. She walked down the hallway with her head held high, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.
Arthur Pendelton stood on the porch alone, but the two men in suits were parked visibly in the idling sedan at the end of her driveway, watching every move. Arthur looked exhausted, his face pale and his hands clenched tightly at his sides. He no longer looked like an arrogant genius; he looked like a cornered animal realizing the trap had sprung.
"We need to talk, Elena," Arthur said, his voice flat and devoid of its previous bluster.
"I have nothing to say to you, Arthur," she replied evenly, keeping her body positioned firmly in the doorway to block his entry. "And if you or your associates take one more step onto my property, I won't be reaching for wire cutters next time. I'll be handing this entire file over to the federal authorities."
Arthur swallowed hard, his eyes flickering toward the black sedan before returning to her unblinking gaze. "You don't understand what you're interfering with, Elena. Those men... they aren't corporate contractors. If you release that data, it won't just ruin me. It will trigger an automated security protocol that targets anyone who has accessed the node."
"Are you threatening me, Arthur?" she asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy calm that made him flinch.
"I'm trying to save your life," Arthur pleaded, stepping slightly closer, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "They think you downloaded the core keys from the server during your little trip through the tunnel. They want the drive back, Elena. Tonight. Or they won't stop until every trace of this house—and everyone in it—is wiped clean."
Elena stared at him, feeling a surge of profound disgust mixed with cold resolve. He had traded his integrity, his neighbors' safety, and his own soul for whatever dark project he was hiding in his basement, and now he expected her to hand over her leverage out of fear.

"Tell your friends in the car that I don't negotiate with criminals," Elena said distinctly, every word deliberate and sharp. "And tell them that my digital cloud backup is set to auto-release to three separate news agencies and the FBI field office if my security status changes for any reason over the next twenty-four hours."
Arthur stared at her, the color draining entirely from his face as he realized she was three steps ahead of him. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He simply turned around and walked slowly back down the driveway, getting into the passenger side of the black sedan before it sped away into the twilight.
