Chapter 7

Carefully, without making a sound, Elena slid her smartphone out of her jacket pocket and adjusted the camera settings to maximum exposure. Through the jagged opening in the cinder block wall, she framed the shot: the two suits standing aggressively over Arthur, the glowing server racks displaying scrolling lines of hexadecimal code, and a clear, unblemished view of Arthur’s face contorted in nervous desperation. She tapped the screen three times, capturing silent, high-resolution video footage that definitively proved the illicit nature of his underground operation.

She began to slowly slide the phone back into her pocket when her boot heel slipped an inch on a stray piece of mortar. The sound was faint—a dry scrape against stone—but in the enclosed basement, it cut through the hum of the electronics like a gunshot.

The two men instantly stopped talking. The taller suit whipped his head around toward the foundation wall, his hand dropping instinctively beneath his jacket toward his shoulder holster. "Did you hear that?" he hissed to his companion.

Arthur froze, his eyes widening in horror as he stared directly at the dark gap in the cinder block wall where Elena was crouched. "Someone's in the utility corridor," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling.

Elena didn't hesitate. She scrambled backward into the narrow concrete tunnel as fast as her hands and knees could carry her, kicking up clouds of dust and debris. Behind her, she heard the heavy thud of a boot hitting the partition wall from Arthur's side, followed by a curse as the entire cinder block structure gave way under the intruder's force.

"Hey! Stop right there!" the suit shouted, his voice echoing menacingly down the passage.

Elena pumped her arms and legs, crawling backward through the cramped darkness with adrenaline surging through every vein. She reached her side of the access hatch, hauled herself upward into her own basement, and slammed the heavy iron door shut with a deafening clang. She dropped the rusted deadbolt into place just as a heavy blow struck the underside of the iron plate from the tunnel below.

Panting heavily, her white blazer dusted with gray ash and her knees aching, Elena stood in the dim light of her basement. She checked her phone. The video file was safely saved, fully uploaded to her cloud storage account via an alternative cellular backup that bypassed local routers entirely. She had the proof. But she also knew that the men next door now knew she was onto them, transforming a silent neighborhood grievance into a direct, high-stakes confrontation.
