Chapter 13

The taller suit froze, his hand hovering inches from his weapon as he weighed the risk. He looked at Elena’s unyielding expression, then at Arthur’s panicked face, and finally at the blinking amber lights on the server rack indicating an active, unyielding data upload. He realized she held all the cards; a violent confrontation here would achieve nothing except their own immediate exposure.
"You're a very difficult woman, Mrs. Vance," the suit muttered, slowly withdrawing his hand from his jacket and stepping back from Marcus. He gestured to his companion. "Pack it up. We're done here."
Arthur scrambled away from the keyboard as the two suits hurriedly began disconnecting the portable drives and stuffing them into their metal briefcases. They didn't look at Marcus or Elena again as they marched past the stairs and out through the upper loading bay, their black sedan roaring to life outside before speeding off into the night.
Arthur remained frozen near the console, looking small and defeated in the harsh fluorescent glare of the underground vault.
Elena didn't waste a second. She walked straight past him, pulled a small pocketknife from her utility pouch, and quickly sawed through the heavy plastic zip-ties binding Marcus to the metal chair.
Marcus slumped forward with a ragged cough, rubbing his raw wrists as Elena helped him to his feet. "Are you alright?" she asked, her voice softening slightly as she supported his weight.
"I'll live," Marcus wheezed, managing a weak, grateful smile. "You actually bluffed them out, Elena. Or... was that really a live feed?"
"Let's just say my actuarial background taught me how to price risk very effectively," she replied with a faint, knowing smirk.
They turned their attention to Arthur, who was staring down at the floor as if waiting for the ground to open up. He didn't run. He knew there was nowhere left to hide.
"You can dismantle the rest of your equipment yourself, Arthur," Elena said, her voice hard and authoritative once more. "By morning, the municipal zoning board, the local utility inspectors, and the federal field office will have every document, photo, and technical log from your basement. You're going to pack your bags, leave this neighborhood, and never come back."
May you like
Arthur swallowed hard, nodding slowly without meeting their eyes. "I understand," he whispered.
Elena and Marcus walked side-by-side up the rusted iron stairs, leaving the subterranean vault behind them. The underground hum of the machinery finally began to fade as they reached the surface, stepping out into the cool, crisp air of a new dawn breaking over Maple Lane.
