Chapter 12

The rusted iron steps groaned softly beneath Elena’s feet as she descended deeper into the subterranean vault, the air growing thick with the metallic reek of ozone and damp concrete. The voices from below grew louder, echoing off the curved stone ceiling of the underground chamber.
Peering around the corner of the concrete stair landing, Elena took in the scene below. The lower vault was a massive chamber housing several humming generator units and an open access hatch leading directly into the municipal fiber-optic conduits. Marcus was tied securely to a heavy metal chair in the center of the room, his head bowed slightly, a dark bruise swelling along his right jawline. Standing over him were the two men in suits, while Arthur Pendelton hovered nervously near the control console, his hands twitching over a portable keyboard.
"We're wasting time," the taller suit snapped, glancing at his wristwatch. "If the remote backup protocols trigger before we purge the local nodes, everything we’ve built gets flagged by the federal mainframe."
"I'm trying," Arthur stammered, his fingers flying across the keys. "Vance’s cloud storage is heavily encrypted. I need direct administrative access to her home router to break the firewall, which means we have to go back to Maple Lane."
"You're not going anywhere," a calm, resolute voice rang out from the stairwell.
All three men whipped around in shock. Elena stepped out from the shadows of the landing, her white blazer immaculate against the industrial grit, her sunglasses still shielding her eyes as she leveled her steady gaze directly at them. She held her smartphone up, the screen illuminated and actively recording every face in the room.
"Mrs. Vance," the taller suit said, narrowing his eyes as a dangerous smile crept across his face. "You really don't know when to stop, do you? Walking right into a closed facility alone. That isn't bravery; that's suicide."
"It's called leverage," Elena replied evenly, her voice echoing through the vault without a single tremor of fear. "Every second of this conversation is currently streaming live to an encrypted server managed by a federal task force downtown. If anything happens to Marcus or me, your identities, your funding sources, and your entire operation are burned across every news desk in the country within sixty seconds."
Arthur stared at her in sheer terror, his fingers freezing over the keyboard. "She's not bluffing," he whispered to the suit. "She planned this from the beginning."

The suit slowly reached beneath his jacket toward his shoulder holster, his eyes fixed on Elena with lethal intent. "Then we just make sure the transmission gets interrupted permanently."
"I wouldn't do that," Elena said, stepping down onto the concrete floor of the vault, her stance balanced and completely controlled. "Because the moment my connection drops, the emergency override locks every fiber-optic line in this county, trapping your master servers in an inescapable feedback loop that will instantly expose every illegal data packet you've pushed through this grid for the last six months."
