Chapter 2

The acrid scent of burnt plastic still lingered near the wooden fence when the heavy pounding shook Elena’s front door. She did not rush. Instead, she set the wire cutters neatly on the kitchen island, wiped her hands on a small linen towel, and walked toward the entryway with measured, deliberate strides. Her white blazer remained spotless, a stark contrast to the storm she had just invited into her life. When she swung the heavy oak door open, Arthur Pendelton stood on her porch, his face mottled red with fury, his graying hair disheveled as if he had run straight from his basement laboratory.

"You cut my feed," Arthur stammered, pointing a shaking finger toward the backyard gate. He was dressed in a rumpled gray sweatsuit, his bare feet jammed into worn leather loafers. "Do you have any idea what you've done? That line was carrying critical telemetry data. Millions of dollars in proprietary research are sitting on those servers right now, completely fried because of your reckless vandalism."

Elena leaned against the doorframe, crossing her arms loosely over her black top. Her sunglasses were pushed up onto her head, revealing cool, analytical blue eyes that refused to flinch under his glare. "You crossed the property line, Arthur," she replied evenly, her voice dropping the temperature on the porch by several degrees. "We discussed this last Tuesday. The town ordinances prohibit running unburied, unpermitted lines across shared fences. You were warned twice in writing, and once face-to-face over the hedge."

"Warnings don't apply to my work," Arthur spat, stepping closer into her personal space, though Elena did not retreat an inch. "You’re a retired actuary, Elena. You push numbers around spreadsheets and prune rosebushes. You don't understand the complexity of the systems you just dismantled. The police won't help you when they realize the liability you've exposed this neighborhood to."

"Then call them," Elena invited quietly, tilting her head with a challenging smirk. "Tell the officers why you needed an unauthorized high-yield data line routed through my backyard to an unregistered basement server. Tell them about the interference you've been causing on every television and radio receiver within a three-block radius since November."

Arthur’s throat worked as he swallowed hard, the bluster draining out of him as quickly as it had arrived. His eyes darted away from hers, flickering toward the end of the driveway before returning to her unreadable face. "You're playing a very dangerous game, Elena," he whispered, stepping back off the porch. "You think you're protecting this street, but you have no idea what's coming through the pipeline."

"Then enlighten me," she said, but he turned on his heel and marched down the walkway without another word. Elena watched him go, knowing this was only the opening skirmish.
