Chapter 1

Elena Vance walked firmly across the immaculate green grass of her backyard, the morning sun glinting off the polished steel of the wire cutters gripped tightly in her right hand. Her blonde bob cut framed a face set in stone, the dark sunglasses shielding eyes that had watched too many boundaries get crossed in this quiet suburban neighborhood. She wore a crisp white blazer layered over a simple black top, paired with classic blue jeans and comfortable beige flats, dressed for yard work that had unexpectedly escalated into a matter of principle. The thick black cable ran horizontally along the weathered wooden fence, a blatant trespass violating municipal easements and private airspace alike.
She stopped three feet from the mahogany wood, her breath fogging slightly in the crisp air before she spoke. "He ignored my warnings," she said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute certainty. It was not a threat born of hot temper, but a calm assessment of a boundary breached. Arthur Pendelton had lived next door for three months, and in that brief span, he had treated the neighborhood like his personal playground, stringing unauthorized high-voltage lines wherever his paranoia or secretive projects demanded.
Elena stepped closer, lifting the heavy-duty tool to examine the offending wire. "He thinks he can do whatever he wants on this street," she muttered, her fingers tightening around the rubberized handles. The black PVC casing of the cable hummed with a low, unnatural vibration that could be felt through the metal teeth of the cutters. It was a digital umbilical cord feeding something heavy into Arthur's basement, something that interfered with the local grid and privacy laws alike.

Her face hardened into an expression of unyielding resolve. This was about more than a wire; it was about the peace she had fought for since moving onto Maple Lane. She positioned the heavy jaws of the tool around the thick sheath, feeling the resistance of the reinforced copper core within. "I'll make sure he regrets it," she whispered.
With a single, practiced squeeze of her forearms, the steel blades bit deep. The cable severed with a sharp snap, followed immediately by a fierce hiss, a sharp puff of gray smoke, and a cascade of bright orange sparks that showered against the wooden slats. Deep tension filled the backyard, the silence rushing back in to replace the mechanical hum. Elena lowered the cutters, watching the smoke dissipate into the breeze. She had drawn her line in the dirt. Now, she waited to see how Arthur would cross it back.
