Chapter 8

The heavy double doors of the recovery unit finally swung open with a pneumatic hiss, breaking the suffocating tension that had filled the waiting room. Dr. Vance, a tall surgeon with silver-streaked hair and weary eyes, stepped through the threshold, holding a thick manila folder against his chest. He looked directly at Elena and Julian, his expression carefully professional yet carrying the heavy gravity of someone who delivered life-altering news on a daily basis. Elena scrambled to her feet, her hands flying to her mouth as she braced herself against the back of the plastic chair for support. Julian stepped forward instantly, closing the distance between them with long, decisive strides, his hand extending instinctively to steady his wife even as he braced himself for the worst.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair," the doctor corrected himself smoothly, offering a sympathetic nod. "I've just finished reviewing Lily's scans and her post-op assessment."

"How is she?" Elena gasped, her voice trembling so violently the words were barely intelligible. "Can we see her?"

"She is currently stable, and the immediate swelling around her brain has begun to subside, which is a very positive sign," Dr. Vance said, offering a measured, cautious smile. "She suffered a severe concussion and a fractured collarbone from the impact of the falling debris. However, because she remains unconscious, we cannot yet fully assess the extent of any deeper neurological impact. We have induced a controlled medical coma to give her brain the best possible environment to heal over the next forty-eight hours."

The relief of hearing that Lily's heart was beating and she was stable warred instantly with the terrifying reality of the induced coma. Elena let out a ragged breath, leaning heavily against Julian’s shoulder as the emotional weight finally threatened to buckle her knees. Julian wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her upright while his own eyes remained fixed on the doctor, calculating every nuance of the medical report.

"Will she wake up without permanent damage?" Julian asked, his voice low, steady, and dangerously intense.

Dr. Vance met Julian’s gaze unflinchingly. "It is entirely too early to tell, Mr. Sinclair. The next two days will be critical. You may see her now, one at a time, in ICU Room Four. But keep your visit brief; she needs absolute quiet."

As the surgeon walked away down the sterile corridor, Claire stepped forward to place a comforting hand on Elena's rigid shoulder, guiding the shattered mother toward the heavy doors that led to their daughter's bedside.
