Chapter 12

Elena walked quietly out of ICU Room Four, pulling the heavy glass door shut behind her with meticulous care so as not to disturb the monitoring equipment inside. Her face was pale, drawn tight with exhaustion, but her eyes burned with a fierce, unstable energy that alarmed Claire the moment she saw her approaching. Elena had spent the last hour holding Lily’s limp hand, listening to the monotonous hum of the life support machines, and the isolation had given her too much time to think, too much time to connect the dots of the terrifying puzzle surrounding their lives. She stopped a few feet away from Julian and Claire, her gaze shifting suspiciously between the two of them.
"You're hiding something," Elena stated, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed adrenaline. "Both of you. I can see it in the way you're standing, the way you're whispering."
Julian pocketed his phone immediately, stepping forward to close the distance between them, though Elena flinched away from his touch. "Elena, we aren't hiding anything from you. We're just trying to manage the situation while you—"
"Don't patronize me!" Elena snapped, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself and glanced nervously down the quiet corridor. She lowered her tone to a fierce, venomous whisper. "That sign didn't just fall, Julian. You know it, and Claire knows it too. And judging by the way you both reacted just now, you know who did it."
Claire stepped forward calmly, raising a hand in a placating gesture. "Elena, please. This isn't the time to turn on each other. We are on the same side."
"Are we?" Elena challenged bitterly, turning her fierce gaze onto Claire. "You've worked for Julian for over five years as his chief legal advisor, Claire. You know every skeleton in his corporate closet, every dirty deal, every ruined life left in the wake of his empire. How do I know you aren't part of whatever war Julian brought to our doorstep?"
The accusation hung in the sterile air like a physical blow. Julian’s jaw tightened into a hard line of fury, though whether it was directed at Elena’s paranoia or the undeniable truth of her words was impossible to tell. He stepped between the two women, his presence commanding and absolute.

"That is enough," Julian commanded, his voice cold and commanding. "Claire has been nothing but loyal, and she is the only reason we have any handle on this crisis. If you want to point fingers, point them at the coward who tried to kill our daughter."
Elena stared at him, her chest heaving with emotion as the devastating realization of how little she truly knew about her husband’s world finally washed over her, leaving her utterly isolated in the harsh hospital light.
