Chapter 10

The digital clock on the hospital wall read 3:14 AM when Claire slipped away from the ICU waiting area to use the private restroom down the quiet corridor. The hospital at this hour was eerily still, populated only by exhausted night-shift nurses and the occasional distant chime of a call button. As Claire washed her hands in the small sink, the heavy silence of the room was broken by the sharp, localized buzz of her cell phone vibrating against the marble countertop. She paused, drying her hands slowly with a paper towel before picking up the device. The screen illuminated the dim room with a stark, cold light, displaying an unknown number with a local prefix.

Frowning slightly, Claire swiped to answer, pressing the phone against her ear without speaking. "Hello?"

"You shouldn't be poking around the conservatory, Claire," a distorted, electronically altered voice whispered through the receiver, low and dripping with menace. "Some doors are better left bolted shut, especially when they lead to skeletons you thought were safely buried."

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat, her grip tightening instinctively around the edges of the phone until her knuckles turned white. "Who is this?" she demanded, her voice dropping an octave as a cold shudder ran down her spine. "Show yourself."

"I'm closer than you think," the voice replied smoothly, accompanied by the faint, distinct sound of rustling paper in the background. "Tell Julian that his little corporate game has reached its final round. The sign was just a warning. The next message won't be aimed at a wall."

Before Claire could utter another word, the line went dead, replaced by the harsh, rhythmic drone of a dial tone. She stood frozen in the small, sterile bathroom, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as the full gravity of the threat settled over her. This wasn't a random structural failure; it was a targeted assassination attempt, a calculated psychological war waged against Julian, with his new bride and her daughter caught directly in the crossfire.

Slowly, Claire lowered the phone, her professional composure returning as she analyzed her next move. She needed to tell Julian immediately, but she also knew that sharing this information would unleash a storm of violence and paranoia that could destroy whatever fragile stability they had left. Walking out of the restroom, she checked her reflection in the hallway mirror, smoothing down her dark grey dress before stepping back out into the bright, sterile corridor where the battle for their survival was just beginning.
