Chapter 6

The fluorescent lights of the hospital's emergency wing hummed with a sterile, relentless energy that felt entirely detached from the raw human agony unfolding within its walls. Julian paced the length of the linoleum corridor, his classic black tuxedo looking profoundly out of place in the clinical environment. The white boutonnière on his lapel had long since been crushed and discarded, yet the faint crease on his lapel remained as a ghost of the celebration that never was. Elena sat slumped on a hard plastic chair nearby, her white lace wedding gown gathered awkwardly around her knees like discarded foam. Her veil had been removed, tossed carelessly onto an adjacent seat, leaving her dark hair falling in disarray around her pale, tear-streaked face.

Claire sat across from her, maintaining a quiet, steadfast presence that offered a strange sort of anchor in the storm. She had driven them to the hospital in her own car, staying close behind the ambulance while the rest of the wedding guests slowly dispersed back into their normal lives, leaving the bride and groom isolated in their private nightmare. The hospital doors swung open periodically, admitting the muffled sounds of the city, but inside this specific corridor, time seemed to have stopped entirely.

"They've been in there for forty-five minutes," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead vents. She stared fixedly at the heavy double doors of the trauma recovery unit, as if sheer willpower could force them to open and reveal good news. "Why hasn't anyone come out to tell us anything?"

Julian stopped his pacing and knelt in front of her, taking her cold, trembling hands in his own. His eyes, usually so calculated and unreadable, were filled with a deep, aching tenderness. "They are doing everything they can, Elena. Lily is strong. You know how resilient she is."

Elena looked down at him, a flicker of doubt crossing her exhausted features. "It wasn't an accident, Julian. I saw the way those brackets looked before we walked down the aisle. Someone tampered with them."

Julian’s expression darkened instantly, a shadow passing over his face that he quickly masked behind a reassuring smile. "Let the authorities handle the investigation. Right now, our only focus is on our daughter." But inside his own mind, the terrifying seed of suspicion took firm root, whispering that the danger was far from over.
