Chapter 2

The heavy silence inside the grand conservatory pressed against everyone's chests like a physical weight. Claire kept her fingers pressed firmly against Lily’s pale wrist, searching desperately for a steady rhythm beneath the skin. Every second ticked past with agonizing slowness, stretching the tension until the air felt brittle enough to shatter. A few feet away, Julian stood frozen in his immaculate black tuxedo, his hand hovering mid-air before dropping slowly to his side. The white boutonnière pinned to his lapel seemed painfully bright against the dark fabric, a sharp contrast to the unfolding tragedy. Beside him, Elena stared down at her daughter with eyes wide and unblinking, her hands clamped over her mouth to stifle a rising sob. Her elaborate white lace veil, usually a symbol of joyful celebration, now draped over her shoulders like a heavy shroud, catching the dim afternoon light filtering through the high glass panes.
Guests seated along the white-floral-decorated aisles began to shift uneasily, their terrified whispers fluttering through the room like the frantic wings of trapped birds. No one dared to step forward, paralyzed by the sudden violence of an accident that had turned a wedding day into a nightmare. Julian’s jaw tightened sharply as he forced his gaze away from the broken wooden sign on the floor and looked toward the back of the venue, where panic was beginning to ripple through the crowd. Someone needed to act, and the paralysis gripping the room had to be broken before it was too late.
"Someone call for medical aid," Julian said, his voice cutting through the murmurs with a harsh, controlled urgency that demanded immediate obedience. Several guests scrambled instantly for their phones, fingers trembling as they fumbled with the keypads to reach emergency services. Claire didn't look up from the child. Her face remained a mask of profound concentration, though a single tear slipped down her cheek, cutting a clean path through the dust on her skin. She leaned closer to Lily, brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from the little girl’s forehead. The shattered wooden frame of the welcome sign lay scattered around them like jagged teeth, a grim reminder of how fragile safety truly was. Elena took a hesitant half-step forward, her knees trembling so violently she almost lost her balance on the polished marble. The silence returned, heavier and more suffocating than before, as everyone waited for a sign of life.
