Chapter 3

Julian knelt beside Claire and Elena, ignoring the pristine fabric of his tailored trousers as they brushed against the dusty marble floor. His movements were calculated, yet his chest heaved with shallow, rapid breaths that betrayed his mounting panic. He reached out to inspect the heavy brass moorings that had anchored the massive welcome sign to the wall above the entrance. The screws were stripped, dangling loosely from the plaster like metal teeth pulled from a jaw. This was no ordinary accident, and the realization chilled Julian to the bone. The heavy oak frame had not simply fallen; it had been dislodged, pushed past its breaking point by deliberate force or extreme, unchecked negligence. He looked up at the high anchor points, his sharp eyes narrowing as he analyzed the clean, unnaturally polished metal threads exposed in the harsh light.

Claire caught Julian’s shifting gaze and offered a microscopic nod, communicating a shared, unspoken dread without breaking her rhythmic check of Lily's vitals. The tension between the three adults formed an invisible barrier, shielding the unfolding medical crisis from the chaotic murmurs of the bewildered guests behind them. Elena finally dropped her hands from her face, her skin deathly pale and her eyes bloodshot from suppressed tears. The diamond necklace at her throat rose and fell rapidly with each ragged breath she took.

"Is she... is she breathing?" Elena managed to whisper, her voice cracking painfully on the final syllable.

Claire did not answer immediately, maintaining her clinical focus as she tilted Lily's chin slightly to keep her airway open. Every fiber of Claire's being was concentrated on the faint, barely perceptible pulse fluttering beneath her fingertips. The seconds stretched into an eternity of psychological torment for the bride and groom. The white floral arrangements lining the aisle suddenly seemed mocking, smelling overwhelmingly sweet in a room now choked with dust and fear. A distant siren began to wail faintly outside, a thin thread of hope cutting through the oppressive atmosphere of the conservatory. Julian placed a firm, reassuring hand on Elena’s shaking shoulder, anchoring her as best as he could while their lives hung suspended by a fragile thread of silence. The ambient noise of the venue faded into the background, leaving only the sound of their collective breathing and the slow, agonizing approach of help.
