Chapter 9: The Power of Presence
During their month in the valley, Vivienne did not sit behind a desk.
Though she could no longer perform standing orthopedic surgeries, she took charge of the pediatric diagnostic unit. Sitting in her specialized hydraulic chair, she examined hundreds of local children, diagnosing nutritional deficiencies, setting fractured bones with gentle precision, and mentoring a new generation of indigenous doctors and nurses.
Leo was her constant assistant. Wearing a small white doctor’s coat over his jeans, he carried chart folders, handed out wooden tongue depressors, and held the hands of frightened toddlers during their vaccinations.
""Hold my hand,"" Leo would whisper to the little children, mimicking Vivienne's gentle tone. ""The lady with the green eyes will make the sting go away.""
One evening, after the clinic had closed, Vivienne sat on the clinic’s open timber deck, watching the sunset cast purple and crimson shadows across the snow-capped Andes.
Dr. Mateo Ruiz, a young surgeon who had grown up in the valley and received a scholarship from the Trust, joined her on the deck.
""You gave this entire valley its future back, Lady Vivienne,"" Mateo said, looking out over the village lights beginning to twinkle in the dusk.
