Chapter 1: The Child at the Gala

The Grand Palais ballroom was a cavern of gilded stucco, soaring frescoes, and the heavy murmur of European aristocracy. Hundreds of guests clad in tailored black tuxedos and designer couture stood beneath nine crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne. Yet, as the eight-year-old boy in an oversized olive hoodie walked across the herringbone parquet floor, the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
The boy walked neither in fear nor in hurry. His sneakers scuffed lightly against the waxed oak, cutting through the parted crowd until he stopped before the woman in the chrome wheelchair.
Her name was Lady Vivienne Sterling. She wore an emerald satin gown with cape sleeves that draped like liquid moss over the wheelchair’s armrests. Her golden hair fell in loose waves around porcelain features, but it was her vivid, iridescent green eyes that had made her a legend in European high society.
Standing behind her wheelchair was Julian Cross, her fiancé and the ruthless managing director of Cross-Sterling Global. Julian's jaw hardened as he placed a protective hand on the back of Vivienne's chair.
""Security,"" Julian muttered under his breath, raising a hand.
""Wait, Julian,"" Vivienne murmured. Her voice was musical, yet carried a quiet authority that stopped Julian in his tracks. She leaned forward, studying the boy’s messy dark hair and earnest dark eyes. ""Who are you? Why are you here?""
The boy stepped closer. He did not look at the tuxedo-clad magnates glaring at him, nor at the shimmering chandeliers above. He looked only into Vivienne’s luminous eyes.
""She said to find the lady with green eyes,"" the boy said, his voice pure and clear, ""and ask for my hand back.""
Vivienne’s breath caught. ""What did you say?""
The boy reached out his small, warm hand. With gentle reverence, his index finger touched Vivienne’s inner left forearm, tracing a faint, horizontal golden surgical scar that ran above her wrist.

A shockwave of recognition shattered the fortress of Vivienne’s composure. Tears welled instantly in her eyes, spilling over her lashes as her fingers curled around the boy’s small hand, clasping it with desperate tenderness.
