Chapter 7: The Garden of Whispers

Spring returned to Lake Geneva, bringing with it the sweet scent of blooming apple blossoms and damp pine.
Vivienne spent her mornings on the stone terrace, learning to navigate the garden paths in a specialized all-terrain wheelchair. Beside her, Leo ran through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby that Vivienne had adopted for him.
""Look, Vivienne!"" Leo called out, kneeling by a patch of damp earth near the stone wall. ""The irises are coming up! They have purple petals and green centers!""
""Just like your mother's garden in the valley,"" Sister Teresa remarked, walking down the terrace steps with a basket of fresh strawberries. Sister Teresa had retired from the convent to serve as the resident director of the estate's local children's sanctuary.
Vivienne wheeled herself over to where Leo was digging. She rolled up her sleeves, revealing her surgical scar.
Leo reached out, his dirt-covered finger gently touching the scar again, just as he had done in the grand ballroom months ago.
""Does it hurt anymore?"" Leo asked with innocent concern.
""No, Leo,"" Vivienne said, taking his small, soil-dusted hand and pressing it against her cheek. ""It used to ache whenever it rained because I thought it was a mark of failure. But now I know it was just the map that led you back to me.""
Leo beamed, leaning his forehead against hers. ""My mom in heaven is happy today.""
May you like
""Yes, she is, my brave boy,"" Vivienne whispered. ""She is watching us from the sun.""
