Chapter 4: The Golden Ledger

By morning, the city's financial press was running sensational headlines:
*Heiress Flees Gala with Mysterious Orphan.* *Cross-Sterling Merger in Jeopardy.* *Scandal Rocks the House of Sterling.*
In the convent’s quiet courtyard, Elena helped Vivienne navigate her wheelchair along the gravel path lined with blooming white hydrangeas. Leo walked beside her, carrying a wooden box that Sister Teresa had retrieved from the convent's vault.
Inside the box were the original triage logs from Sierra del Sol, kept hidden by the local parish priest for eight years.
Elena, who had served as Vivienne’s nurse for five years, examined the stamped manifests. ""Lady Vivienne, these aren't just medical logs. These are geological hazard warnings signed by Cross-Sterling Mining three weeks *before* the disaster. Julian Cross personally signed the waiver refusing to evacuate the valley because shutting down the lithium refinery would cost two million dollars a day.""
Vivienne ran her hand over Julian's sharp, arrogant signature.
""He knew,"" Vivienne whispered, a cold clarity settling over her heart. ""He knew the mountain was unstable. He caused the landslide that crushed those families, that broke my spine, that orphaned this child. And then he spent eight years pretending to be my savior—the loyal fiancé who stayed by the poor crippled heiress.""
Leo looked up at her, sensing the shift in her energy. He reached out and gently placed his small hand over hers on the armrest. ""Are you sad, Lady?""
Vivienne looked down at his bright, innocent face. The sorrow in her eyes burned away, replaced by an unbreakable, maternal resolve.

""No, Leo,"" Vivienne smiled softly, turning her palm upward to interlock her fingers with his. ""I am not sad anymore. I am finally awake.""
