Chapter 12: The Symphony of St. Jude

On Leo’s tenth birthday, Vivienne organized an open-house festival at the estate to benefit St. Jude’s Orphanage and the Andean Medical Fund.
Hundreds of families from Geneva, local artisans, doctors, and former patients gathered on the sweeping lawns. A local youth orchestra played Vivaldi under the shade of the weeping willow trees, while children ran along the gravel paths eating strawberry tarts.
Sister Teresa sat beside Vivienne on the stone terrace, watching Leo show a group of children how to paint water lilies on small ceramic tiles.
""Look at him, Vivienne,"" Sister Teresa said, her eyes shining with quiet pride. ""He has his mother’s courage and your unyielding spirit.""
""There were times, Sister, when I cursed the wheelchair,"" Vivienne admitted, watching the sunlight dance on the lake. ""I thought of everything I had lost: dancing, hiking the ridges, running through the rain.""
""And what do you think now?""
Vivienne looked down at her hands—steady, capable, and full of warmth.
""Now I know that the chair was the only thing that forced me to sit still long enough to see what truly mattered,"" Vivienne smiled. ""If I had remained on my feet, running from gala to gala, I would have walked right past him.""

""God often breaks our legs so we learn how to fly with our hearts,"" Sister Teresa murmured, patting her hand.
