Chapter 7

The concussive force of the transformer explosion hit the reinforced steel door like a physical blow, sending a violent shudder through the entire frame and knocking Leo and Marcus off their feet. They crashed hard against the opposite wall, gasping for air as the thick black smoke rushed into the hallway, instantly reducing visibility to zero and choking out the red emergency strobes.

Inside the freezing server room, Maya was thrown backward by the shockwave, tumbling over a low-slung cable tray and hitting the frosty concrete floor with a hard thud. The breath rushed out of her lungs in a sharp gasp, her side throbbing with a dull, agonizing ache. The diagnostic terminal flickered violently, its screen washing out to a blinding white before settling on a flashing green confirmation prompt: DECRYPTION COMPLETE - BACKUP SECURED.

Maya groaned, pushing herself up onto her hands and knees, her fingers shaking uncontrollably from the combined effects of the sub-zero temperatures and the physical shock. She glanced toward the flash drive plugged into the server terminal; the indicator light had finally shifted from frantic crimson to a steady, solid blue. She reached out with a numb hand, gripped the drive, and yanked it free just as the terminal screen went completely black.

Outside in the hallway, the silence that followed the explosion was terrifying. No one was screaming. No one was banging on the door. The only sound was the low, sinister hiss of the automated fire suppression system releasing a heavy blanket of chemical foam across the floorboards.

"Leo?" Maya called out, her voice barely a whisper as she dragged herself back toward the fractured glass window. "Marcus? Chloe?"

There was no response. Through the dense layer of soot and chemical residue coating the glass, Maya could make out the dark, motionless shapes of her classmates slumped against the server racks. The heavy blast door at the end of the corridor had been blown off its pneumatic hinges, revealing the dark, yawning concrete mouth of the maintenance tunnel leading deeper beneath the campus—and straight toward the old fallout shelter where Bryce had retreated.

Maya pressed her palm flat against the fractured glass panel, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She needed to get out of the cold room immediately, but the manual override lever on the inside of the door had been warped and jammed shut by the extreme heat of the transformer explosion. She was safe from the immediate smoke, but she was trapped in a freezer with a failing structural seal and a rapidly depleting oxygen supply as the ventilation system continued to malfunction.

She looked around the server room, searching for anything heavy enough to leverage against the jammed manual release mechanism. Rows of towering server cabinets hummed quietly in the dark, their internal backup batteries keeping the emergency lights flickering in a faint, eerie amber rhythm. On the central console, a small red emergency communicator blinking silently caught her eye. It was a direct line to the campus security dispatch—a line that hadn't been monitored by humans in over five years, entirely automated by a legacy AI routing system.

Maya crawled across the frosty floor, her limbs stiff and unresponsive, and reached up to grab the heavy metal handset. She pressed the talk button, listening to the static-filled silence on the other end of the line.

"This is Maya Lin," she said, her voice steady despite the overwhelming terror gripping her chest. "I am inside Sub-level Sector Four. We have an active security breach, multiple casualties from a transformer explosion, and an unrecorded individual operating under the alias of Bryce Vance has compromised the main financial mainframe. Send immediate extraction."

The static on the line hissed loudly for three agonizing seconds before a crisp, synthetic voice responded from the speaker: PROTOCOL ACCEPTED. DISPATCHING FACILITY RECOVERY TEAM TO SECTOR FOUR. REMAIN INSIDE THE SECURE PERIMETER.

Before Maya could process the automated response, the heavy steel door beside her groaned loudly, and the warped manual release lever slowly began to turn from the outside.
