Chapter 3

The sudden drop in temperature inside the server room was brutal, wrapping around Maya like an icy shroud as the ventilation system pumped sub-zero air directly into the enclosed space. Her breath plumed in thick white clouds, and she instinctively pulled the drawstrings of her grey hooded sweatshirt tighter around her face, her fingers stinging with the onset of numbness. Outside the reinforced glass, the chaotic energy of the hallway had completely evaporated, replaced by a tense, suffocating panic.

"Leo! What did you do?" Chloe shrieked, her phone slipping from her trembling fingers and clattering hard against the concrete floor. The live stream was still active, broadcasting a skewed view of the ceiling and the frantic shouts of the teenagers.

"I didn't touch anything!" Leo shouted back, his voice cracking with unmasked terror as he slammed his palms against the biometric scanner. The glowing red ring around the scanner pulsed rapidly, ignoring his touch entirely and emitting a low, rhythmic warning tone. "It's locked down! The whole sub-level is locked out!"

Marcus backed away from the server racks, his eyes wide as the automated fire doors at both ends of the hallway dropped with deafening crashes, sealing them all inside the underground corridor. "We're trapped. Why won't the doors open? Leo, you said you just programmed a timed lockout!"

"I used the override script Bryce gave me!" Leo confessed, his bravado entirely gone as he shoved Marcus away in frustration. "He said it was just a prank app to scare her for ten minutes!"

Inside the cold room, Maya pressed her forehead against the freezing glass, watching the argument unfold on the other side. She could not hear their words clearly through the soundproof barrier, but their panicked gestures and pale faces told her everything she needed to know. Bryce had manipulated Leo into locking her away, using the varsity captain's arrogance as a weapon to isolate her while he executed whatever malicious protocol he had installed in the mainframe.

Maya forced her shivering fingers into the pocket of her sweatshirt, clutching the small encrypted flash drive. If Bryce wanted her data erased, he needed physical access to the mainframe terminal inside this specific sub-level sector. But the server room she was trapped in wasn't just a random storage closet; it was the primary cold-storage archive for the school district's historical financial records dating back twenty years—records that detailed the illegal embezzlement scheme involving the missing administrator and several prominent members of the school board.

She looked up at the wall-mounted security monitor, but the screen had gone entirely black, replaced by a single flashing command line prompt in glowing green text. A string of code began to auto-populate on the screen, scrolling downward at a dizzying speed. It was a cryptographic puzzle, and the decryption key was tied directly to the biometric signature of the person currently locked inside the room.

Maya realized she had less than three minutes before the automated thermal dump reached critical levels and froze the entire room's hardware, permanently destroying the physical hard drives—and potentially causing severe hypothermia. She stumbled toward the central server rack, her boots crunching slightly on a thin layer of frost forming on the floor. She needed to interface her flash drive with the emergency diagnostic port before the system locked her out permanently.

She reached the main terminal, her stiff fingers fumbling with the USB port beneath the flashing amber lights. She slid the drive home, and the screen flashed bright white. A dialogue box popped up instantly, demanding a secondary administrative password that only one person on the entire campus possessed.
