Chapter 5

A violent hiss erupted from the cooling unit directly above Maya’s head, followed by a sharp electrical snap that echoed like a gunshot through the small server room. A cloud of thick, acrid gray smoke billowed from the upper vents, instantly mixing with the freezing vapor and obscuring her vision. Maya coughed violently, bringing her sleeve up to cover her nose and mouth as the stinging smell of burning insulation filled the air.
Outside the reinforced glass, Chloe screamed in outright terror as the hallway lights flickered erratically and died, leaving the entire sub-level illuminated only by the pulsing amber glow of the emergency system. Marcus and Leo stumbled backward, crashing into the server racks as the smoke began to seep out from beneath the rubber seals of the cold room door.
"Maya! Let us out! The smoke is coming through the vents!" Leo roared, throwing his entire body against the heavy steel door with a desperate thud that produced no movement whatsoever. His varsity jacket was scuffed with soot, and his earlier arrogance had completely dissolved into unadulterated panic.
"The system is shorting out!" Maya yelled back, her voice strained and raspy from the smoke. She pressed her face as close to the glass as possible so they could see her urgency. "Bryce didn't just lock us in—he's overloading the main transformer to fry the entire database!"
"Bryce wouldn't do that!" Marcus yelled defensively, though his voice wavered with doubt as he coughed into his grey hoodie. "He’s our friend! He plays on the team with Leo!"
"He’s using you!" Maya shouted back, her fingers furiously tapping the terminal keyboard as the screen flickered dangerously between the decryption progress bar and a critical system failure warning. "He set this whole thing up to frame the athletic department for the embezzlement scheme so he could take the fall-guy money and run!"
The terminal screen suddenly flashed a harsh red warning: CRITICAL HARDWARE FAILURE - EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN IMMINENT. The progress bar froze at ninety-nine percent, locked in a stubborn loop as the electrical current surged through the aging infrastructure of the sub-level. Maya realized she had mere seconds before the local power grid completely collapsed, taking all the digital evidence with it into permanent oblivion.
She glanced down at the flash drive plugged into the diagnostic port. The tiny indicator light on the drive was glowing a steady, frantic crimson instead of its usual calm blue. If she pulled it out now while the write cycle was incomplete, the files would corrupt instantly, destroying the only proof of the conspiracy. But if she left it in, the impending electrical surge would fry the internal circuitry and weld the USB port shut forever.

A loud metallic grinding noise echoed from above the ceiling tiles, accompanied by the distinct sound of heavy cables snapping under immense tension. The wall-mounted security monitor sparked once, twice, and then shattered in a shower of glass and blue sparks, plunging the hallway into pitch darkness save for the dim emergency strobes.
Through the dense smoke pressing against the glass, Maya saw Leo grab the fire extinguisher mounted beside the door. Without hesitation, he swung the heavy metal cylinder against the reinforced window, shouting something unintelligible through the glass as the heavy metal cracked against the thick pane with a deafening clang that barely left a scratch on the industrial-grade laminate.
