Chapter 2

The grainy black-and-white footage on the wall-mounted security monitor flickered erratically, casting an eerie greenish hue across Maya’s face as she stood shivering inside the freezing server room. The digital countdown outside continued its relentless march downward, but the cold was no longer the primary source of dread gripping her chest. She pressed her palms against the thick glass pane, squinting through the distortion of the analog camera feed to get a clearer look at the corner of the hallway just beyond the main server racks.

"Hey, let me out!" Maya called out, her voice muffled by the thick insulation of the reinforced door. "Leo, open the door right now! That monitor is showing something it shouldn't!"

Outside in the hallway, Leo laughed loudly, leaning against the wall alongside Marcus and Chloe, who were still intensely focused on broadcasting the event to their growing online audience. None of them paid any attention to her warnings, completely absorbed by the thrill of their petty cruelty.

"Listen to her panic," Marcus chuckled, tilting his phone toward Leo. "She's already begging. Classic Maya."

"Told you she would crack in under a minute," Leo replied smugly, tapping the biometric scanner with his knuckles. "Keep recording, Chloe. This is going straight to the school portal tomorrow morning."

Inside the cold room, Maya ignored their taunts. Her eyes remained locked on the monitor. The camera angle showed a dead zone in the hallway—an area that was supposedly blocked off by structural renovations for the past three months. Yet, clear as day, a tall figure in a familiar dark jacket was standing motionless in the shadows, holding a portable terminal that was physically wired directly into the school's primary mainframe junction box.

The figure turned its head slightly toward the camera lens, and the ambient light caught the sharp outline of a jawline and a distinctive silver wristwatch. It was Bryce. But Bryce was supposed to have transferred to a boarding school in Vermont three weeks ago, right after the sudden disappearance of the school's head administrator. Rumors had circulated wildly, but the official story delivered by the principal was that Bryce had simply left due to family reasons. Seeing him here, lurking in the restricted sub-level beneath the gymnasium, completely shattered that narrative.

Maya reached into the pocket of her grey hooded sweatshirt, her numb fingers brushing against her personal encrypted flash drive—the very device containing the backup files she had downloaded from the school's financial database the night before. She realized with a sudden jolt of terror that she wasn't just the victim of a high school prank; she had willingly walked herself straight into a tactical trap. Leo and his friends weren't just acting out of ordinary teenage malice. They had been used to herd her into this exact room while Bryce wiped her digital footprint from the network.

A sharp, metallic click echoed from the door lock. The digital countdown timer hit zero, but instead of the door springing open to release her, the amber biometric scanner turned a glaring, solid crimson. The server racks around her suddenly fell silent, their cheerful blue and green blinking lights shifting simultaneously to a harsh, pulsating amber warning sequence.

Maya gasped as the overhead vents hissed violently, and a cloud of freezing vapor blasted down from the ceiling. Through the glass, she saw Leo’s smug smile instantly vanish, replaced by an expression of sheer panic as his own smartphone screen went completely black.
