Chapter 4

The blinding white light from the diagnostic terminal illuminated Maya’s pale face as she stared in disbelief at the blinking cursor on the screen. The secondary administrative password prompt required a cryptographic signature that hadn't been active in the school's system since the sudden disappearance of Principal Henderson nearly a month ago. Rumors had swirled around the hallways that Henderson had simply burned out and fled the state to escape mounting financial pressures, but looking at the system logs timestamped just ten minutes prior, Maya knew the truth was far more sinister.
"Henderson..." Maya whispered, her teeth chattering as the ambient temperature continued to plummet toward freezing.
Outside the glass partition, Leo and his friends were frantically pounding on the steel door, their desperate cries muted by the thick insulation. Marcus was frantically kicking at the lower hinge, while Chloe huddled against the server racks, sobbing quietly as the emergency lighting cast long, distorted shadows across the hallway floor. They were finally realizing the gravity of their actions, trapped in their own manufactured cage while the building's automated security systems steadily stripped away their digital access credentials one by one.
Maya ignored them, her focus zeroed in on the flashing terminal interface. She knew that Principal Henderson had been an expert in legacy encryption, often using personal historical milestones as baseline passphrases for sensitive district archives. Her mind raced through the history lessons Henderson used to drone on about during school assemblies—the founding date of the district, the name of the old athletic stadium, the coordinates of the town's original settlement. None of them worked. The terminal flashed a sharp red error message: ACCESS DENIED - ATTEMPT 1 OF 3.
Her fingers were growing dangerously stiff, the lack of circulation making it difficult to type accurately on the mechanical keyboard. She blew warm air onto her hands, rubbing them together fiercely to restore feeling. If she failed the remaining two attempts, the system would initiate a localized data wipe, erasing the financial records that proved Henderson hadn't fled—he had been locked out, silenced, and likely disposed of by the very same school board members currently funding Leo’s athletic scholarship.
Through the frosted glass, Maya caught a sudden movement in the reflection of the hallway monitor. The figure in the dark jacket—Bryce—was walking calmly past the panicked group of teenagers. Leo didn't even notice him pass; he was too busy screaming curses at the locked door. Bryce paused for a fraction of a second, turned his head toward the reinforced window of the cold room, and stared directly at Maya with an expression of cold, detached amusement. Then, he raised a small metallic keycard, swiped it against a hidden maintenance panel behind a server rack, and vanished down the emergency stairwell.
A sharp alarm blared inside the cold room, signaling that the countdown had dropped to ninety seconds. The terminal screen refreshed, presenting a cryptic hint beneath the password prompt: WHERE THE GOLDEN BEAR SLEEPS.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The Golden Bear wasn't a historical event; it was the mascot of the private academy where Bryce had allegedly transferred, but it was also the hidden nickname of the underground fallout shelter built beneath the old gymnasium during the Cold War—a shelter that hadn't been legally accessed since 1962, and the exact location where Principal Henderson’s office safe was rumored to have been relocated.
She typed the coordinates of the old fallout shelter into the terminal with trembling fingers and hit enter. The screen flashed green, and the progress bar surged forward to ninety percent. But before the final authorization could clear, the entire server rack beside her sparked violently, sending a shower of orange electrical embers across the frosty floor.
