Chapter 10

The utility tunnel stretched out before them like the gullet of a mechanical beast, flanked by dripping condensation pipes and tangles of fiber-optic cabling that hummed with a low, disruptive frequency. The emergency lighting grew scarcer with every fifty yards they crossed, leaving long stretches of absolute darkness that forced Maya to rely on the faint glow of the small diagnostic LED on her flash drive to guide her footsteps.

"Which way?" Marcus panted heavily, his arm slung over Leo’s shoulder to keep the taller boy upright as they stumbled through the gloom. "Maya, this map doesn't make any sense! These tunnels weren't on the standard campus schematic!"

"Because they were sealed during the Cold War," Maya called back over her shoulder, not breaking her stride as she navigated a rusted junction box. "They connect the old gymnasium fallout shelter directly to the district administrative annex. Bryce knows this layout better than anyone because he was the one who archived the original blueprint files for the board."

Behind them, the sound of Bryce’s footsteps echoed sharply off the curved concrete ceiling. He wasn't shouting threats or demanding they stop; his calm, methodical pace was far more terrifying than any outburst of anger could have been. It was the sound of a predator who knew the maze inside and out, comfortably herding its prey toward a dead end.

Leo stumbled, his knee buckling against a protruding pipe, and he slid down to the concrete floor with a groan. "I can't... I can't keep running, guys," he wheezed, clutching his ribs where he had taken the brunt of the transformer shockwave. "My side feels like it's on fire. Just go. Leave me here."

"Shut up, Leo, we're not leaving you," Marcus snapped, though his own legs were shaking with exhaustion as he tried unsuccessfully to pull Leo back to his feet. "Get up! He's right behind us!"

Maya stopped, turning back to face them in the gloom. The rhythmic sound of Bryce’s footsteps was growing closer, bouncing off the damp walls with agonizing clarity. She knew Marcus couldn't carry Leo alone, and if they all stopped here, Bryce would corner them in the narrowest part of the utility corridor where there was zero cover.

"Grab his other arm," Maya instructed firmly, stepping back to take Leo's left side. Together, she and Marcus heaved the varsity captain upright, throwing his arms over their shoulders and half-dragging him forward through the damp corridor.

The tunnel ahead sloped downward at a sharp angle, terminating in a heavy, circular steel bulkhead door with an old-fashioned wheel valve handle in the center. It looked identical to the blast doors featured in historical documentaries about mid-century nuclear bunkers. A rusted metal plaque beside the hatch bore a faded, peeling label: SECTOR ZERO - EMERGENCY FALLOUT SHELTER.

"That's it," Maya breathed with a mixture of relief and dread. "The shelter."

She rushed forward, dumping Leo’s weight onto Marcus for a second while she grabbed the heavy steel wheel valve and threw all her weight into turning it. The metal was locked tight with decades of corrosion, refusing to budge an inch. Her hands screamed in pain against the ice-cold iron, the blisters from the server room cold intensifying into sharp agony.

"It's jammed!" Maya panicked, straining against the wheel with everything she had left. "The seal is rusted shut!"

Behind them, the beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness of the tunnel. Bryce stepped into the light, stopping twenty yards away. He lowered the flashlight, looking at them with a calm, detached smile as he reached casually inside his jacket.
