Chapter 1

The bright fluorescent lights of the server hallway hummed, casting a sterile white glow over the polished concrete floor. Leo leaned casually against the metallic casing of a humming server rack, his blue and yellow varsity jacket with its prominent felt 'N' catching the harsh overhead glare. He wore a faded grey t-shirt and creased khakis, a self-satisfied smirk playing across his face. He pointed a finger deliberately toward the heavy steel secure door at the end of the corridor, where a biometric scanner glowed a soft amber and a digital countdown timer flickered in stark red digits.
"Time for the cold room challenge," Leo said, his voice dripping with condescension as he looked directly at Maya. "Let’s see you hack out of this."
Maya stood motionless near the threshold, her long dark hair falling over the shoulders of her oversized grey hooded sweatshirt. She did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice, but the tension in her jaw betrayed her boiling frustration.
"This isn't a joke, Leo," Maya snapped, her dark eyes narrowing as she stepped closer to the heavy door. "You don't even know what systems you're messing with right now."
"Oh, come on, genius," Leo shot back, his smirk widening as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Always the coward when things get real. Admit it, your precious little coding skills are completely useless without your cozy desk and dual monitors."
Chloe, standing a few feet away in a matching grey sweater, giggled softly while holding up her smartphone to capture every second. Beside her, Marcus stood in a grey hoodie, adjusting his phone's angle to ensure the lighting was optimal for their live stream.
"Just lock her in already," Marcus muttered, laughing under his breath. "Let’s see if she's as smart as she always pretends to be in AP Computer Science."
"Stop it, both of you," Maya hissed, turning sharply to face Marcus and Chloe. "If you override the facility lockdown protocol, it triggers an automated thermal dump. Do you have any idea how fast the temperature drops in there?"
"Quit being dramatic," Leo interrupted, stepping into her personal space. "You wanted to prove you're the best hacker on campus. Here is your chance. Unless you're too scared?"
Maya stared at him, her chest rising and falling with steady, controlled breaths. She knew arguing was pointless; they had already made up their minds to humiliate her. Without another word, she stepped past the threshold into the freezing interior of the secure room. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind her with a deafening metallic thud, and the digital countdown timer above the frame instantly locked in place at twenty-nine seconds.

Maya turned around and looked up attentively through the reinforced glass window, her wide dark eyes reflecting the chaotic rows of server racks flashing with steady blue and green indicator lights. The chill of the room instantly began to bite through her thick cotton sweatshirt, but her focus was entirely drawn to a flickering wall-mounted security monitor positioned just above the server banks, displaying real-time feeds of the hallway outside.
"Wait…" Maya whispered quietly to herself, her breath frosting in the air. “Is that Bryce?”
