Chapter 9 - Sanctuary in the Lions' Den

“Hold your fire! Federal agents in pursuit of an armed fugitive!” Agent Vance yelled back at the courthouse security guards, trying to flip the narrative entirely.

Elena slammed her body against the massive oak doors, throwing her arms up in the air as three different security guards leveled their assault rifles directly at her chest.

“Don’t shoot! I have classified evidence of high-level government corruption and an active federal conspiracy right here in my hand!” Elena screamed over the pouring rain.

Agent Vance ran up the steps, flashing his corrupted badge furiously at the guards while breathing heavily from the brief chase through the alley.

“She’s a mentally unstable fugitive who escaped from a psychiatric facility! Arrest her immediately and hand over that stolen property!” the agent demanded authoritatively.

The head security guard looked back and forth between Elena’s desperate, dirt-stained face and the badge held out by the sweating federal investigator standing beside her.

“Ma’am, step away from the doors and place your hands behind your back, or we will be forced to use non-lethal crowd-control measures,” the guard ordered sternly.

Elena pulled the black USB drive from her pocket, holding it high above her head so the security cameras mounted overhead could capture every single detail clearly.

“This drive contains encrypted proof that Agent Vance and the Vance family syndicate have infiltrated the Department of Justice! Check the metadata before you touch me!” she pleaded.

Before the guards could make a move, a crisp, authoritative voice echoed from the grand marble hallway behind them, stopping everyone in their tracks instantly.

“Lower your weapons, guards. Let the woman and the child inside right now,” commanded Judge Harrison, walking down the grand staircase in his formal black robes.

Agent Vance paled visibly, stuttering as he tried to block the judge’s path with his arms outstretched across the entrance threshold.

“Your Honor, this is a breach of protocol! She’s holding stolen evidence that compromises active federal investigations into organized crime!” the agent argued frantically.

Judge Harrison walked past the security checkpoint, casting a cold, disdainful glance down at the corrupt agent who had disgraced his badge in broad daylight.

“Agent Vance, your direct supervisor was arrested twenty minutes ago for accepting bribes from the Vance family. You are officially suspended pending a grand jury indictment,” the judge stated.

The corrupt agent reached instinctively for his sidearm, but three security guards tackled him to the marble floor in a lightning-fast motion, slapping cuffs on his wrists.

Elena let out a long, ragged breath of relief, her knees finally giving out beneath her as the sheer exhaustion of the day caught up to her bruised body.

Judge Harrison stepped forward just in time to catch Elena before she hit the floor, offering a warm, steady hand to help her up into the safety of the foyer.

“Welcome back to the land of the living, Elena. The real trial is about to begin, and this time, the whole world is going to watch the empire fall,” the judge said gently.
