Chapter 13 - The Confession of the Bride

Clara was dragged to the witness stand by two armed marshals, her hair messy and her designer clothes wrinkled from days spent in the municipal holding cells.
“State your name and relation to the primary defendants for the official court record,” the clerk instructed monotonously, avoiding eye contact with the disgraced bride.
“Clara Vance. I was Julian’s wife… or at least I tried to be before all this came crashing down around us,” Clara sobbed softly into the vintage microphone.
The federal prosecutor stepped up to the podium, folding his arms across his chest as he stared down at the woman who had orchestrated the entire kidnapping plot.
“Mrs. Vance, did you or did you not forge the adoption papers and medical records that declared your twin sister legally dead three years ago?” the prosecutor asked directly.
Clara covered her face with her cuffed hands, her shoulders shaking with genuine, broken sorrow as the weight of her lifelong deceit finally crushed her spirit completely.
“I did it… I forged everything. I was so tired of always being the shadow, the second-best twin, the one nobody noticed or cared about,” Clara confessed, her voice cracking.
Julian bowed his head in utter humiliation, refusing to look at the woman he had married just days ago in front of hundreds of elite society guests.
“And what about the offshore funds? Did Julian know that the money used to buy his initial corporate portfolio came from Elena’s personal trust fund?” the prosecutor pressed on.
Clara dropped her hands, looking across the courtroom directly at Julian with a mixture of bitter resentment and lingering affection in her tear-filled eyes.
“He knew. He always knew where the money came from. He just pretended to be innocent so his hands wouldn’t get dirty while I did the heavy lifting,” Clara revealed bluntly.
Julian leaped out of his chair, screaming curses across the courtroom until the marshals physically slammed him back down into the hard wooden bench.
“You lying bitch! You planned the whole thing! I was just a figurehead!” Julian bellowed at the top of his lungs, foaming at the mouth with blind rage.
Judge Harrison didn’t even bother using his gavel this time; he simply watched the toxic relationship collapse entirely under the harsh light of truth.
“The court accepts your full confession, Mrs. Vance. Your cooperation will be noted in the final sentencing recommendations, though it will not spare you from prison,” the judge stated.
Elena walked down from the witness stand, holding Lily’s hand tightly as they walked up the aisle toward the exit doors of the grand federal courtroom.

“Are we finally done with the bad guys now, Mommy?” Lily asked softly, looking up with bright, hopeful eyes as the heavy oak doors opened to the afternoon sun.
