Chapter 5 - The Hidden USB Drive

“We are safe for now, baby girl, but the people who helped Clara steal our lives are still out there hiding in the shadows,” Elena whispered seriously into Lily’s hair.

From the backseat of the idling sedan, a rugged man in a dark suit leaned over and pushed open the passenger door, offering them both a warm, reassuring smile.

“Get in quickly, ladies. The local precinct is already swarming with reporters, and we need to upload the decrypted files before they wipe the server,” Marcus urged quietly.

Elena scooped Lily up into her arms and slid into the leather-trimmed interior of the vehicle, slamming the door shut just as camera flashes flickered in the distance.

Marcus hit the gas pedal, weaving the unmarked car expertly through the maze of police barricades and news vans parked outside the luxury wedding venue.

“Did you get the physical ledger from Clara’s dressing room before the feds swept the building?” Marcus asked, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the rearview mirror.

Elena reached into the deep pocket of her trench coat and pulled out a small, encrypted black USB drive, holding it up so the dashboard light illuminated its metallic casing.

“I got it. Every shell corporation, every bribed official, and every offshore account number belonging to Julian and his corrupt associates is right here on this little chip,” Elena said grimly.

Lily yawned softly, resting her tired head against Elena’s shoulder and closing her eyes as the adrenaline crash finally caught up to the brave little flower girl.

“Good. Because the moment we leak this to the independent press, the entire financial district in downtown Manhattan is going to experience a Category 5 earthquake,” Marcus noted grimly.

Elena turned her head to look out the window at the towering skyscrapers of the city, knowing that her fight for justice had only just reached its second phase.

“They thought they could erase me like a bad memory, Marcus. But ghosts have a funny habit of coming back to haunt the living,” Elena murmured, her voice laced with iron determination.

Marcus nodded slowly, turning the steering wheel sharply down a deserted side street that led toward an underground parking garage beneath an old brick warehouse.

“We have a safe house set up downstairs. No one knows about this location except our internal affairs contact inside the federal bureau,” Marcus explained, parking the car in a dark corner.

Elena gently carried a sleeping Lily out of the car, cradling the child against her chest as they walked toward a heavy steel security door at the end of the hall.

Marcus punched a numerical code into the keypad, the heavy deadbolts disengaging with a loud mechanical clunk that echoed through the concrete bunker.

As the heavy steel door swung inward, revealing a room full of glowing computer monitors and tactical gear, a red emergency phone on the desk suddenly began to ring loudly.
