Chapter 7 - The Underground Escape

“I’m not running away anymore, Marcus! If Thomas wants this USB drive so badly, let’s give him a front-row seat to his own destruction!” Elena declared fiercely.
Elena reached down to the desk, pulled the metallic black USB drive out of the computer port, and slipped it into the hidden inner pocket of her trench coat.
“Elena, be rational! Thomas Vance isn’t some corrupt businessman like Julian; he’s a convicted hitman who leaves no loose ends behind!” Marcus argued frantically, strapping a holster to his hip.
Before Marcus could finish his warning, the heavy steel security door of the safe house exploded inward with a deafening roar, sending shards of metal flying everywhere.
A thick cloud of blinding white smoke rolled into the bunker, accompanied by the distinct sound of heavy combat boots marching purposefully across the concrete floor.
Elena grabbed a heavy iron wrench off the workbench, dropping low behind a row of server racks while pulling a terrified Lily out of her sleep-induced haze.
“Shh, baby, stay right behind me and don’t make a single sound no matter what happens,” Elena whispered fiercely into Lily’s ear, her hands steady despite the chaos.
Through the haze of smoke, a tall figure stepped into the center of the room, wearing a tactical helmet and holding an assault rifle fitted with a thermal scope.
“I know you’re in here, little sister-in-law. Hand over the drive, and maybe I’ll let you and the brat walk out of this damp hole alive,” Thomas Vance mocked, his voice cold and raspy.
Marcus lunged from behind a concrete pillar, tackling the armored mercenary to the ground in a brutal display of hand-to-hand combat that shattered a computer monitor.
“Elena, go! Run down the tunnel now!” Marcus roared as he struggled to pin the mercenary’s arms against the floor while a second assailant entered the room.
Elena didn’t hesitate for a single second; she scooped Lily up into her arms, kicked open the heavy iron door leading to the storm drain, and plunged into the darkness.
Cold, rushing water soaked her boots as she waded through the narrow brick-lined tunnel, navigating the pitch-black labyrinth solely by memory and pure maternal instinct.
Behind them, the muffled sound of a gunshot echoed down the concrete corridor, followed by the terrifying ring of echoing laughter bouncing off the damp walls.
“Mommy, I’m scared. Where are we going?” Lily whimpered, burying her wet face in Elena’s trench coat as they splashed hurriedly through the ankle-deep runoff water.
“We’re going to the federal courthouse downtown, sweetie. It’s the only place left in this city where the law still has more power than corrupt money,” Elena promised breathlessly.
After what felt like hours of agonizing crawling and running through the claustrophobic drainage pipes, a faint circle of natural light appeared at the end of the tunnel.
Elena sprinted toward the exit, pushing open a rusted metal grate that opened up into a secluded alleyway directly behind the massive stone columns of the federal building.

She stepped out into the pouring rain, shielding Lily with her own body, only to find herself staring straight down the barrel of a polished silver handgun held by an unexpected ally.
