Chapter 11 - The Brother's Betrayal

“You think you’re so smart testifying against us, Elena, but you don’t even know what our brother Thomas has hidden in his offshore safety deposit boxes,” Julian suddenly blurted out.
Judge Harrison banged his gavel again, silencing the sudden uproar in the gallery as the prosecutors exchanged sharp, calculating glances across the aisle.
“Mr. Vance, are you currently attempting to submit a spontaneous confession on the record regarding undisclosed assets held by your brother?” the prosecutor asked astutely.
Thomas shot Julian a murderous glare, realizing his younger sibling had just sold him out to save himself from receiving the maximum federal prison sentence.
“My brother is lying! He’s trying to pin his own corporate crimes on me because he knows he has no legal defense left!” Thomas yelled out, standing up abruptly.
Elena watched the brothers tear each other apart with a cold, detached satisfaction, knowing that greed was finally destroying the foundation of the Vance empire.
“Your Honor, the prosecution requests a ten-minute recess to confer with our legal team regarding this sudden and unexpected defense statement,” the prosecutor requested calmly.
“Granted. Court is in recess for ten minutes. Do not leave the room,” Judge Harrison stated, standing up and walking back into his private chambers.
During the chaotic break, reporters swarmed the press rows, typing furiously on their laptops to upload breaking news updates about the internal family civil war.
Elena walked over to the corner of the room where Lily was still happily coloring in her sketchpad, completely unfazed by the dramatic courtroom shouting matches.
“You’re doing great, sweetie. Just a little longer and we can go home and eat all the ice cream we want,” Elena whispered, gently brushing a stray curl from Lily’s forehead.
“Can we invite Marcus too? He helped us run away from the bad men in the tunnel,” Lily asked innocently, holding up a drawing of a smiling dog.
“Of course we can invite Marcus. He’s a very good friend who kept us safe when things were really scary,” Elena smiled warmly, feeling a genuine sense of peace.
Marcus walked into the gallery from the back doors, holding a fresh cup of coffee and giving Elena a subtle thumbs-up signal from across the crowded room.
The heavy wooden doors of the private chambers swung open, and Judge Harrison stepped back onto the bench, signaling the immediate resumption of the grand trial.
“The court is back in session. Counsel, you may proceed with your cross-examination of the witness regarding the undisclosed offshore accounts,” Judge Harrison ordered.
The federal prosecutor walked back to the podium, holding a freshly printed transcript handed to him by Marcus just moments before the recess ended.

“Mrs. Vance, we have decrypted the secondary file accessed during the recess. It appears Thomas Vance’s offshore accounts implicate three sitting federal judges as well,” the prosecutor revealed.
