Chapter 10 - The Grand Jury Assembles

Three days later, the high-security courtroom of the federal district building was packed to absolute capacity with investigative journalists, federal prosecutors, and curious spectators.
Elena sat at the primary witness table wearing a tailored black suit, her blonde hair pulled back neatly, looking completely composed and ready for the legal battle of a lifetime.
Little Lily sat quietly beside her, coloring in a sketchpad with crayons provided by a kind court bailiff while waiting for the proceedings to formally commence.
At the defense table across the aisle sat Thomas Vance and Julian Vance, both wearing orange jumpsuits and handcuffs, glaring across the room with unbridled hatred.
Judge Harrison banged his heavy wooden gavel three times, cutting off the loud murmurs of the gallery and bringing absolute, pin-drop silence to the grand courtroom.
“This court is now in session for the preliminary grand jury hearing regarding the United States versus the Vance Syndicate and associated conspirators,” Judge Harrison announced.
The lead federal prosecutor stood up from his chair, buttoning his jacket and walking toward the center well of the courtroom with a heavy leather binder in hand.
“Your Honor, the prosecution calls Elena Vance to the stand as our primary expert witness regarding the systemic fraud and corporate embezzlement operations,” the prosecutor stated.
Elena stood up gracefully, walking past her former husband without sparing him a single glance, and stepped into the witness box to take her solemn oath.
“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” the court clerk asked in a steady, formal voice.
“I do,” Elena replied clearly, her voice echoing clearly through the vintage microphone clipped to the wooden podium.
The prosecutor stepped up to the podium, clicking a remote control that immediately lit up the massive overhead projector screen hanging behind the judge’s bench.
“Mrs. Vance, please explain to the grand jury how you came into possession of the encrypted financial ledger currently displayed on the monitor screen,” the prosecutor requested.
Elena leaned into the microphone, taking a slow, natural breath before looking directly into the camera lens recording the historic livestream for national television.
“My sister Clara and my husband Julian systematically erased my legal identity three years ago, locking me in a private facility to steal my inheritance and my child,” Elena testified.
A collective gasp swept through the gallery as the explosive revelation hit the public airwaves, broadcast live to millions of households across the entire nation.
Julian slammed his cuffed hands down onto the wooden defense table, shouting an obscenity that was instantly muted by the audio engineers controlling the courtroom feed.
“Order in the court! One more outburst from the defense table, Mr. Vance, and you will be removed to a holding cell for the remainder of the trial!” Judge Harrison warned sharply.

Thomas Vance chuckled darkly beside his brother, leaning over to whisper something in Julian’s ear that made the younger man shrink back into his chair in visible terror.
