Chapter 8 - The Drainage Tunnel Escape

"Freeze! Don't move an inch!" the tactical operative roared, his weapon leveled squarely at Dr. Aris Thorne’s chest.
Without hesitation, Thorne shoved Clara hard through the newly opened hole in the brick foundation, sending her tumbling headfirst into the freezing, sludge-filled drainage tunnel. As gunfire cracked through the damp basement air, a bullet sparked off the stone wall inches from Thorne’s ear, sending a shower of sharp stone fragments into the air. Thorne dove backward through the narrow opening just as a heavy boot slammed down onto the brickwork.
Clara crawled frantically through the muck, the icy water soaking through her black pants and chilling her to the bone. Behind her, she could hear Thorne scrambling through the tunnel, his heavy breathing matching her own ragged gasps. The metallic clanging of the operatives trying to widen the brick opening echoed behind them like the strikes of a doom-laden clock.
"Keep moving! Don't look back!" Thorne shouted over the sound of rushing water.
They crawled for what felt like hours through the claustrophobic concrete tube, the air growing progressively fresher as they neared the exit. Finally, Clara burst out of the end of the drainage pipe, tumbling down a steep earthen embankment into a shallow, freezing creek bed surrounded by dense autumn brush. Thorne tumbled out right behind her, coughing violently and clutching his left shoulder where a graze from a stone fragment had torn his trench coat.
They lay panting in the mud for several long minutes, listening intently for the sound of pursuit, but only the gentle rustle of wind through the pine trees answered them.
Clara slowly sat up, shivering uncontrollably. The bioluminescent glow beneath her maroon t-shirt had subsided slightly into a dull, pulsing hum, but the pain remained a dull, agonizing constant. She looked at Thorne, her eyes burning with a mixture of fear and furious betrayal.
"You knew," Clara said, her voice shaking violently as she pointed a trembling finger at the doctor. "You knew what was in that water trial before I ever walked into that grocery store. You were watching me."
Thorne winced, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe the mud from his glasses. "I didn't know you specifically, Clara. But I knew what Bio-Genics was doing to this town. I was their lead geneticist until I tried to shut the project down six months ago. They fired me, blacklisted me, and tried to silence me."

Clara stared at him, the horrifying pieces of the puzzle finally snapping into place. But before she could demand answers about how to reverse the nightmare inside her, Thorne’s portable radio crackled to life with a burst of static, broadcasting a chilling emergency dispatch that mentioned her home address.
