Chapter 6 - The Basement Descent

The heavy footsteps thundered closer, the flashlight beam bouncing wildly against the peeling paint of the hallway walls. Without a second hesitation, Dr. Aris Thorne lunged toward a rusted floor grate tucked beneath an old filing cabinet, kicking it aside with a heavy thud.

"In! Now, Clara!" Thorne urged, dropping to his knees and sliding feet-first into the dark, damp opening.

Clara didn't hesitate. Ignoring the tearing pain in her abdomen, she dropped to the floor and squeezed herself through the narrow metal opening, tumbling awkwardly down a set of steep, rotting wooden stairs into absolute blackness. She hit the dirt floor hard, the breath knocked entirely out of her lungs. Above her, the heavy slamming of boots echoed through the clinic floorboards, followed by shouted orders and the unmistakable sound of heavy equipment being shoved aside.

"Thorne! I know you're in here! Hand over the subject and walk away, and you won't be charged with treason!" a cold, amplified voice boomed from above.

A hand reached out in the darkness, grabbing Clara’s shoulder and pulling her violently behind a stack of rotting wooden crates. It was Thorne, breathing heavily, pressing a finger firmly against his lips to demand absolute silence. Through the gaps in the floorboards overhead, they could see the harsh wash of tactical flashlights sweeping across the upper room they had just vacated.

"She's not up here, Commander. The back door is sealed, but there's a sub-level access grate. Looks like they went down," a second voice reported from above.

Clara clutched her stomach, biting down on her lower lip so hard she tasted copper. The synthetic nano-organisms inside her felt like they were waking up, feeding on the adrenaline pumping through her veins. A subtle, bioluminescent purple glow began to emanate from beneath her maroon t-shirt, casting faint, eerie shadows against the damp stone walls of the basement.

Thorne stared down at her midsection in the dim light, his eyes widening in horror as he realized the glowing intensity was increasing exponentially.

"Clara... the cellular rate of acceleration... it's reacting to the stress," Thorne whispered, his voice trembling with despair. "If they throw a thermal scanner down here, they'll see that light right through the floorboards."

As if in answer to his nightmare scenario, a heavy, metallic cylindrical object dropped through the floor grate above them, clattering onto the dirt floor just a few feet away with a sharp, hissing sound.
