Chapter 4 - The Abandoned Clinic

The gravel crunched loudly beneath the tires of Clara’s sedan as she followed Dr. Aris Thorne’s battered blue pickup truck down an overgrown access road on the outskirts of town. The neon glow of the Supercenter was long gone, replaced by the deep, suffocating darkness of rural woods. They pulled up in front of a dilapidated single-story brick building that looked like a rural veterinary clinic abandoned twenty years ago. A rusted metal sign hanging precariously by one chain read 'Oak Creek Wellness Center.'
Clara parked behind the truck, turning off her engine. The silence of the woods was absolute. She sat in the dark for a long moment, gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white. Thorne stepped out of his truck, his trench coat billowing slightly in the wind, and walked over to her car door, pulling it open before she could lock it.
"Get out, Clara. We need to stabilize that cellular mutation before it reaches your vital organs," Thorne said, his tone urgent and clinical.
Clara stepped out into the cold night air, her legs feeling like jelly. The purple veins on her arm had darkened significantly during the ten-minute drive, spreading now toward her shoulder. The pain was no longer a dull ache; it was a hot, tearing sensation that made her gasp.
"What is this? What did they put in me?" Clara demanded, her voice trembling as she followed him toward the heavy wooden door of the clinic.
Thorne unlocked a massive padlock with a heavy brass key, pushing the door open to reveal a surprisingly modern interior illuminated by harsh, battery-powered emergency lights. "Not 'they' as in the grocery store clerks. This started weeks ago. Did you take part in the municipal water filtration trial downtown?"
Clara froze in the doorway, a sudden, chilling memory washing over her. Two months ago, the city had offered free health screenings and mineral supplements to local residents over forty. She had taken the small, gray pill.
"Yes," she whispered, walking into the sterile, dusty room. "I took the supplement."
Thorne locked the heavy door behind them, bolting it securely from the inside. "That wasn't a vitamin, Clara. It was an experimental synthetic nano-organism designed to repair tissue, but something went catastrophic. It's consuming you from the inside out."

Before Clara could process the horrific revelation, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the back of the building, followed by the heavy sound of breaking glass.
