Chapter 12 - The Red Alert

The deafening wail of the emergency klaxon bounced off the pristine white tile walls of the Bio-Genics corridor, accompanied by an automated, synthesized voice broadcasting a lockdown warning.
"Security breach. Sector twelve sub-level access detected. All personnel report to designated containment zones," the metallic voice droned repeatedly.
"They didn't just recognize your signature, Clara—the central AI flagged the mutation as a containment hazard the second the door unlocked!" Dr. Aris Thorne shouted over the noise, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward a nearby stairwell door.
Clara didn't hesitate. She threw her weight against the heavy push-bar of the stairwell door, sending it flying open just as a bank of overhead security cameras swiveled downward, locking their mechanical lenses directly onto them with a series of sharp clicks. They scrambled up the concrete stairs three steps at a time, their lungs burning as they climbed toward the twelfth floor. The pain in Clara’s abdomen was sharp and relentless now, but the strange geometric light beneath her shirt pulsed in rhythmic synchronization with her footsteps, guiding her upward as if the nano-organisms inside her knew exactly where Elena Vance was waiting.
They burst through the twelfth-floor stairwell door into a sprawling, high-tech laboratory filled with silent computer terminals, glowing centrifuge machines, and endless rows of glass storage coolers. Standing near a central console in the middle of the room was a striking woman in her late forties with sharp features, silver-streaked hair pulled into a bun, and a pristine white lab coat over a dark grey dress. It was Dr. Elena Vance.
Elena spun around at the sound of the door crashing open, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she saw Clara and Thorne standing before her.
"Aris? Good God, what have you done? And the subject..." Elena gasped, rushing forward with a metal data-drive in her hand. "You triggered every alarm from here to the basement. A tactical team is already taking the elevator."
"We don't have time for lectures, Elena," Thorne snapped, slamming the heavy fire door shut and jamming a steel pipe beneath the handle. "Do you have the neural suppressant ready? The mutation cycle has reached terminal acceleration."
Elena looked at Clara, her expression shifting from panic to profound, sorrowful guilt. She stepped behind her lab counter and picked up a heavy titanium briefcase, punching in a rapid sequence of digital codes. The lid popped open with a hiss, revealing a row of glowing blue vials and an automated pneumatic injector.
"I have the formula, but it won't just cure her, Aris," Elena said, her voice trembling as she looked directly into Clara’s terrified eyes. "To purge the synthetic organisms, we have to trigger a total biological reset. It's going to feel like dying."

Before Clara could process the terrifying choice, the heavy steel fire door behind them buckled inward with a deafening crash as a team of armed tactical operatives began cutting through the hinges with a high-powered plasma torch.
