Chapter 11 - The Bio-Genics Tower

The monolithic glass-and-steel tower of Bio-Genics Corporation rose into the predawn sky like a jagged obsidian monolith, casting a cold, artificial shadow over the empty downtown plaza. Clara killed the engine of her sedan three blocks away, parking in the deep shadows of a municipal parking garage. Beside her in the passenger seat, Dr. Aris Thorne checked a small, modified laptop screen that was receiving a weak, intermittent data ping from his encrypted burner phone.

"Elena’s terminal is on the twelfth floor," Thorne whispered, slipping a dark canvas backpack over his shoulders. "The exterior security grid is automated, but the biometric scanners at the employee service entrance require an active clearance card."

Clara reached down and touched her abdomen. The geometric purple pattern beneath her maroon t-shirt had stopped glowing as fiercely, settling into a dull, pulsing warmth that felt like a second, erratic heartbeat. She took a deep, steadying breath, feeling a strange, cold clarity wash over her system. The humiliation at the Walmart checkout counter felt like it had happened in another lifetime; she was no longer just a terrified shopper caught in a misunderstanding—she was carrying living evidence of a corporate crime.

"I don't have a clearance card, Aris," Clara said, looking at him with steady, unblinking eyes.

"You don't need one," Thorne replied grimly, pulling a small, sterile medical syringe from his backpack. "Your cellular structure has mutated to the point where the building's biometric sensors read your biological signature as a master-level administrative entity. The nano-organisms absorbed the facility's base DNA coding during the water trial."

Clara shuddered at the thought of what was living inside her veins, but she nodded anyway. They stepped out of the car into the bitter predawn wind, walking with deliberate, unhurried steps toward the towering glass facade of the corporate headquarters.

As they approached the secure service entrance, a heavy steel security door blocked their path, flanked by a glowing blue facial recognition and palm scanner. Thorne motioned for Clara to step directly in front of the lens.

Clara stood before the glass panel, holding her breath. For a terrifying second, the scanner blinked red, emitting a low, warning tone. Then, beneath her maroon t-shirt, her abdomen flared with a blinding flash of purple light.

The scanner beeped a sharp, pleasant green. The heavy steel door clicked loudly and swung inward, revealing a sterile, dimly lit hallway beyond. But as they stepped inside, a loud, klaxon alarm suddenly began to wail overhead, flooding the corridor in flashing red emergency lights.
